From that angle, the engine looks like a BSA C11 or C12 250cc. Maybe Ariel bought the engines from them? British companies did this a lot to cut costs.

Talk to https://www.draganfly.co.uk/, they specialise in Ariel and BSA, really nice and knowledgeable people. They did some of the work on my M21 for me.

the only thing my budget would stretch to is a bantam

Nowt wrong with Bantams, I've had them for over 15 years... Very Happy easy to work on and the parts are still cheap and plentiful as there are still loads of them around.

would this type of bike make a nice cafe racer?

Not really, the frame geometry and forks are totally the wrong look.

I bought it when I was 16, as a bit of a wreck. Spent a few months rebuilding it, and rode it for a while.

Don't really know the cost. would've been much less if I didnt spend alot on the engine. It's a ss50 5 speed engine (manual clutch, proper gearbox) with a 88cc bore kit, 22 mm carb and a kitaco full race cam. Oh, and decent clutch springs, and messed around with gearing.

I made the exhaust. C70 downpipe with a random bit of pipe, mated to a "designer" table leg from B&Q with the end chopped off and a aluminium end cap that I turned up.

Still got it. Need to dig it out soon. Thumbs Up
