I have an old Yamaha Maxim XJ700 with 18k miles on it, the timing chain is making a rattling noise, I have never adjusted it, could some one tell me how to adjust it or just send me the 1 or 2 pages of the repair manual that pertains to the adjustment, any help would be greatly appreciated.

if you look at the back of the barrels, the tensioner is the pointy thing sticking out of the back at the middle, below the carbs.

Remove it and give a thorough clean, push the rod fully back in and douse the thing in some oil.

refit it and see if that iproves things.

If the above makes no difference then check the cam guides and tensioner blade before you change the chain. They are generally made from nylon and wear more than the chain, especially the tensioner blade.
