Wally you wouldn't happen to know ( about) how much a set of chrome or alloy rims and a set of new spokes and nipples would cost do you ? and also if I would be able to get them from the Stafford show in oct?
Could get my grand dad to lace them up ect, which is were the costs mount up from wheel builders ive heard.

Cheers

Right I have now got £180 saved , I am going to the stafford show on Saturday to buy some more parts/ a new project.

Still can't decide if I should make the Colt Like new ( Ie new chrome parts ect) or spend my money on another project bike ( something a bit newer) 1970 onwards Ect and have 2 nice but not mint bikes.
Or one old mint condition bike
Thinking

If I am going to spend the money on the colt I will be buying the following:

New chrome headlight rim.

Battery box lid. ( Old one flew off on the way to a show Laughing )

Single seat.

Rear chrome carrier.

Rear foot rest rubbers.

Split link, lost the other one yesterday. (needed)

Half round spedo.

New Gear leaver , Chrome.

New kick start, chrome.

New fork shrouds , chrome.

kickstart rubber.

New exhaust front pipe.

New tank badges.

New chrome tank badge surrounds.

New chrome Tank ridge lip cover thing.

New chrome wheel rims , spokes and nipples

Ah choices choices. Crying or Very sad

Yea, couldn't agree more there mate ! Like Christmas , only better. Very Happy

Just fitted the headlight rim , tax disk holder, new leavers, new headlight dip switch, pillion footrest rubbers and test fitted the seat's , the front one seems ok, I will just have to make up some brackets for the springs , the back one is going to be a bit more tricky as there is a big bracket right in the way , but I'm sure if I can't work something out my dad will be able to. Very Happy

Next on my list of things to buy are some water slide transfers with the Ariel logo on ( going to go near the bottom of the tank on the middle white strip), and also a minimum oil level one , just finishing touches really , making the bike look more finished as apposed to just looking quite plain.

Will up date the thread with pictures when I get the seat's on.

Cheers.

would this type of bike make a nice cafe racer?

Cafe racer?? The colt engine is a smaller version of the BSA C11 which produced 11 BHP (coincidence? Nah!). Colt 200cc, C11 250 cc.

Cafe racers had dropped bars, lowered suspension, engine tuned. The idea was to leave one cafe, and er, well, race to the next one. Ah the good old days, when we were all sensible!

Wotcha.

That's the first time I've ever seen a carburettor turned through ninety degrees. Is that standard on the Colt or some kind of strange inlet manifold ?

All you need now is a nice little Smiths "D" shaped speedo Mr. Green

Quote from mag article " I never plan to sell the bike.......... be able to show my kids, and i suppose grandkids, what i did when i was 14 years old"

I don't think you should sell it for the above reasons and all the work you have put into it at your age too. Understandably you may not have a lot of money for your next project but why rush, just save up again and something will turn up

Partly I agree, but trust me it's a crap bike, I can't see the point in keeping a bike that is dog slow, goes round corners like an arthritic pensioner, and stops like a...well... It doesn't really stop to be honest..

I wrote that article just over a year and a half ago, way before I had had a "proper" ride on it.
I can't justify keeping the bike just for "show" and maybe a few miles round town on a sunny sunday afternoon

I don't do nothing for a living.
made £100 by buying, mot'ing and selling a vauxhall astra, so that bought the Honda 125.
The cb550's were bought with my Christmas and birthday (both with in 5 days of each other) money 2007, The Ariel with my Christmas +bday money 2006.
Done a few paint jobs for people, £50 here , £50 there ect, I just save money and don't waste it, I currently have no money what so ever as I bought the 125, so it will be December by the time I come to have any money again.

You do realise that they will suffer from these same problems? Haha, I jest jamie. Really impressive restoration though! I don't think I'd have the patience to do something like that now at the age of 22 let alone when I was 14!

Seriously though, to re-itterate what everyone else is saying, I'd really try to keep it. Some new tires (not knobblies - more road biased rubber) would help the handling and breaking a lot, so you may get use of it in a year (or whenever you get your license). Or alternatively sell it to someone who you know (family, family friend etc) so that there's always the chance that you may be able to buy it back at some point (like when you get a job in a few years or something). Seriously, you'll probably kick yourself in 10 years though if you don't hold onto it!

Cheers, Stu

Why is there not an airfilter fitted, and why is the carb sucking in from the side?, from the original pictures the filter sits behind the head. What happened to the head?, that broken fin i mean. Tidy up the wiring and those other items and i`m sure you`ll get a buyer, still you`ve done one hell of a job and the paint looks stunning.- Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Very Happy -Jockey.
