Hi,
Basically what can you do to check if an MX bike you might want to buy is legit, assuming the seller does not have an original receipt of purchase, but there appears to be no tampering of engine an frame numbers and markings?

If you purchase a stolen bike un knowingly, then where do you stand exactly if it turns out to be hot? Does the original owner have to provide proof of purchase and documentation to the Police before they can seize the bike, or can they do this anyway if they are told that the bike may be stolen?

You can also ask the police to check the numbers for you.

Does the DVLA keep record of competition bikes that haven't been road registered?

As far as I was aware, for a road registered bike; even if a bike has been stolen, the DVLA only cares that they have the address of the 'keeper', even if this is the theif, they just want the address for their records and a previous owner would have to contact the Police who could then request these details from the DVLA.

There's no was of finding out if a MX bike has been stolen. unless the owner has the original recite. Now the only way the police can tell you that the bike is stolen is if they have the same fram number as the one you just gave them.

DVLA cant really do much unless the bike has a V5 / registration document.

Now if you do buy a bike and the cops come knocking on your door asking you about the bike and it is a stolen bike, then they will confiscate it. it will be you who get hit in the pocket and there's nothing you can do about it. and as for the bike ,the cops will keep it till the original owner come for the bike with some form of Prof that he's owners. if no 1 comes for the bike within a certain number of days or if the investigation is closed then the bike will be crushed.

and as for the person you bought the bike from the police cant really do anything more the interview him about the bike, and get the Prof that he stole it

hope that answers you question.

This is where Datatag comes in to its own - if an unregistered, Datatagged 'bike is stolen then it's recorded and you can find out by checking with Datatag.

If it's been stolen it should have 'stolen' written underneath the seat on the right side, simple.
