i started by looking for ways to remove the rust from my petrol tank for a yamaha rxs100 which im currently about to respray. it had rust inside and out, and rather than just sealing the tank streight away i thought id attempt to get rid of as much rust as possible. so i looked at the options:
hamerite do a few chemical gel and general liquid rust removal solutions but ive used these before i observed little or no reaction whatsoever so i wasnt about to put my faith in them again. also they are expensive for the amounts you get and so thoroughly not worth it. there are other chemicals out there, designed for rust, i beleive jenolite is another company, and i also beleive there are alot of acids that will take up rust but they would also corode the metal too, so do you want to take the risk.
i then moved onto other ideas, and was reminded of GCSE chemistry. after 2 seconds on google i found electrolysis and pretty much a step by step guide:
https://www3.telus.net/public/aschoepp/electrolyticrust.html
and there are a load more out there.
hmm, electricity, water and various piece of metal, ... not a good idea, well maybe not, but i didnt electricute myself doing my tank so a little bit of brains and u can save urself a nasty shock.
so; does it work? well i thought i was working quite well for me, obviously i had alot of time, and ive left this in the plastic box for about 3 days, theres nothing really to it, and in total, buying the plastic crate, cost me about 20 quid.
after u do this the rust still is there, but not as bad, and the stuff thats left seems to almost be lying on the surface rather than actually attached, a quick brush off and the piece cleans up nicely. |
