Having washed the little KTM to remove large quantities of both Somerset and Lincolnshire, I set to and started doing the valve clearances.

Yesterday I'd dropped in to the KTM dealer for advice, and they pointed out the salient bits. Having removed the spark plug to help find TDC I started to remove the cover to get to the valves. The bolts have copper washers, and having undone the first one I managed to flip the washer in to the spark plug hole. Bugger. That was bad.

The washer is now resting on its edge on top of the piston, leaning against the spark plug hole. Hmm - this could be interesting...

Time to go fishing I think :-\

Lesson learnt: Put a rag in the plug hole before doing anything else. Or better still, put the spark plug back in... Embarassed

Fishing it is!

You could try a stick with a blob of blue-tak on the end. N.B. this can lead to having a washer AND a blob of blue-tak in your engine.

I have seen this done. Make sure it's on a sheet so you know if you got the bit out or not. It means draining all the fluids out and removing the battery but easier than taking the head off.

All that was actually last weekend. Today was to be fishing day, but as it happens, I got the washer out via an interesting and not entirely intentional method. After borrowing one of those flexible grab things from my Dad, I used that to try and grip the washer and it didn't work - it was now stuck to the top of the chamber / bottom of the spark plug hole (if you see what I mean).

To give me a bit more room to get a hooked bit of wire to it, I kicked the engine over a little to get the piston down - only I over did it, and blew the washer out of the hole and across the garage. Result! Dance!

Of course things went downhill from there when I tried doing the valve clearances - if I'd stayed in bed for the last two weekends I'd have achieved more...

I fscking hate 'bikes at the moment... Mad
