I was after one but soon found out that they have only just come out and therefore second hand ones aren't cheap. Also the fact that they do around 80 miles to the tank or something which doesn't sound great...

Take a look on auto-trader, but look for the SM part. They made the bike for a while, then SM'ed it..

I was looking at these.

Insurance - depends on you most; get some quotes. Shouldn't be too bad though.

Cheapest I saw one for is about £2300 - all have low miles.

They should be under 33hp in the real world, so won't need to be restricted if you are on a restricted licence.
On that, they won't be massively fast - they don't weigh much but don't make much power either.
It'll probably seem fast if you're not used to anything better though.

Instead of getting one, I ended up with a CCM, which while a year older (2004) only had 1900 miles on it. Mine came with supermoto and enduro wheels and cost £2k.
The CCM uses a standard DRZ400E engine, which makes more power than the DRZ400S engine used in the DRZ400SM. It is over 33hp. It also has better suspension and weighs about 15kg less than the DRZ-SM.

is it a ccm400? or a more powerful 1? because i like the ccmc30 or something but its to powerfull and apperntly the 230 is a cheap engine that doesnt go quick anyway

A friend of mine did a track day on a DRZ400? just a few days ago. He certainly kept up with many of the faster bikes due to his cornering ability.

It's a CCM 404. The R30 is heavier and uses a rotax engine which is less reliable. Still hasn't got masses of power so shouldn't be too bad if you're careful.

The 230 is going to be a 'my first off road bike'; not so good for road use.

What's your budget?

Considered getting a trail bike and putting some road biased tyres on? You could look at upgrading to supermoto wheels when you have some money.

The DR600 and 650 are worth looking at (need to have a bit of weight behind you to kick the 600, 650 is leccy start.)

Even something like the older DR350, which while it isn't massively fast would be better than a 125. The DR400S has been out for a lot longer than the 400SM so there's quite a few cheaper ones around.

This is my CCM by the way.

well ive got a bike that i should get 1200 and 800 quid cash. thats for insurance and bike. my licence should be payed for with bday money and my dad helping me. i got a years no claims so insurance is a little better.
i havent thought of what i can do really because i dont really know the options.
my parents dont want me getting a big bike and needing it to be restricted they say i should just get a lighter bike.
the 400 is close to 33bhp so if it is over it shouldnt be affected too much hopefully.
what kind of speed can you expect from a 4 stroke 250 lke a drz250?
