Right, im sick of my shit heap suzuki cruiser thingy and fancy trying a bit of enduro/green laning malarky.

I have had a bit of a gander on the interweb but with no avail.

What i am after is a 125cc, road legal enduro bike. Capable of light offroad and green laning while not sacrificing to much road worthyness.

KTM's are nice but they don't seem to mention anything about road legalness on their site, there is a kawacrappy dealer near me so i am gonna go have a gander and speak to them about prices etc.

But i am totally new to the offroad biking world so any pointers would be helpful.

Thanks
Matt Cool

Matt, simple answer, buy a Yamaha DT-125R electric start model from the last couple of years, feed it only top quality fully synthetic 2 stroke oil, don't beleive what anybody tells you about how to derestrict it, let a yamaha dealer do it for you (its an electrical mod) and enjoy. Only things you might want to add for off roading are a bash plate (sure somebody must do one - yamaha don't) and some proper bark busters, the plastic flaps they come with look good but acerbis or such like are much better.

cheers! Adrian.

Thanks Adrian.

I had a quick look around the internet about the dt125r and it appears its a 2 stroke.

As i commute everyday to work i don't think it would be practical (fuel economy and stuff)

I did, however, notice the xt125 is a 4 stroke, how would that handle the rough stuff compared to a dt?

Hi Matt,

no buy the DT, you will thank me for it.

Put the two side by side and you'll see what I mean the DT is built right, the XT125 is pure crap. Simple things set them apart, the DT has an old fashioned speedo with a cable these work. The XT has a digital arrangment with a speedo sensor, these break for a hobby.

The DT is a much bigger (and better looking) bike, but being a two stroke its as light as the XT, if you pass your test a derestricted DT will give 25-30HP an XT cannot be de restricted.

If you go off road on an XT125 you'll snap the shock, go off road on a DT and you'll get muddy and have a laugh.

I know a bloke with a 2 year old DT that has 16K on the clock. It has never broken, economy if that's an issue a DT should give 50 to the gallon at least - an XT about 80-90, however you'll need the money you save on petrol with the XT for the bus fares when it breaks.

cheers! Adrian.

Unless you're on a really tight budget, economy should be fine.

The KMX125 and CRM 125 are also worth a look - and all these will be a lot cheaper / more reliable than a KTM125.
You can get the KTMs in road legal form, but they wouldn't even be legal for someone on a full 33hp restricted licence to ride, never mind on L plates - thus fuel economy I'd expect to be a fair bit worse.

My CRM 125 kept up ok with a XR250 and RMX250 greenlaning - though I definitely had to put more effort in that the other riders I reckon.

I'd be happy with an older DT125 in decent nick.

id recommend the kmx myself. its a performance 2 stroke no doubt, but in a lower tune than rs / nsr ect (mines 22hp @ RW) i commute 10 miles each way 6 days a week on mine, never broken down yet Thumbs Up

oh, and you can get road tyres too Smile

I would recommend the DT. They're capable off road and don't cost the earth to run. Restricted they are a bit flat so get some of those restrictors off and you'll find it more able on the roads. Derestricted they will not see 25-30hp but certainly a good 20hp which is pretty good for a 125 in a relatively low state of tune. If you need advice on derestriction then drop me a PM and I'll guide you through it.

The tyres to run if you spend a lot of time on the road are Avon Distanzias. Wont go far wrong with these but consider a knobbly tyre if you do more off roading than road riding.

Another +1 for the DT, cheap, reliable and easy to look after. the kmx is good offroad too but the nikasil barrels can make top end freshen ups pricey and mine liked to eat stator coils and cdi boxes.
When i was on holiday in ibiza i hired an aprillia 125 enduro styled bike that was really good offroad (some nice dirt tracks up s`argamassa way) and behaved itself on the road too, but i cant remember what it was called.
