Hi, does anyone have a proper z1 voltage regulator wiring diagram? I have managed to strip mine down, but some of the resistors have lost their colour coding as have the capacitors. I have the one out the haynes manual, but it is rubbish.

Regards,

Andy

they are cheap as chips on ebay

They would have been seperate units on account of its age. Just bung a superdream type reg/rec unit on, saves a load of grief. Surprised it hasn't already been done to be honest.

it doesnt matter if its point or cdi, they both do exactlty the same job,
the bonus with the z1 is that it has a 3 phase alternator Thumbs Up
so makes wiring very easy Very Happy

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies! I have rebuilt this bike from scratch (with loads of help from other bikers on the net). The regulator overcharging is a common fault on the Z1's, but as I am trying to keep it original as possible so I thought I would rebuild it with modern components rather than replace and share the results with other Z1 owners. It is a solid state unit, but I have managed to break apart and trace the circuitry, but I still need to know the component values. If you can help please let me know.

Regards,

Andy

Ahh, go on, just sneak a modern reg/rec inside the old box.

I'll tell you secret. All those 'concourse' vintage bikes you see do stuff like that. Do you honestly think a 1950's, rubber jacketed Lucas motorcycle battery still works? You pull that rubber jacket back and I bet you a fiver it says 'varta' underneath.

Bit pointless making it 100% original if it you can't ride more than 25 miles without frying the battery etc.. everyone I know just puts a later J model set up on em.

The factory manual doesnt give any values for the resistors, the zener or the thyristors. you're going to have to suck it and see I'm afraid. However, I suspect that it isnt all that sensitive as they are a current limiting load. I would guess they run about 100-200 ohms and are likely high power output ones so make sure they are well bonded to the heatsink.
