not really a pig problem but i am very confused. Neutral
aparentley all the bar ends on honda's are the same, so i bought some new ones because there was one missing on my bike.
anyone know how to get the bloody things off? There's like a locking thing on the metal inserts that go into the bar, which the bar ends screw into. Both the bar end and the metal insert have semi-circle ridges, so they wont twist. I cant unscrew the buggars! Anyone know how to get the bar ends off?

picys to help my wierd explination:

Unscrew the bolt from the end? Neutral Do you mean you're trying to remove a bar end just by twisting it? Confused

I don't think all Honda bar ends are the same. The ones I have on my VFR400 don't match the ones I have for a CBR600. Not sure why I've got a set of CBR600 bar ends, I think I thought they might fit my TT600...

Hmm, yes I always thought most bar ends had a bolt with an allen head on - cross head seems a bit daft tbh (I may be wrong though).

Perhaps someones stuck a different bolt in and overtightened it?

Only thing I could think of doing is hacksawing the semi circle off the bar end so it's flush (that's if you were gonna chuck it afterwards anyway)

Although...have you tried unscrewing it while the inner weight is inside the handlebar? Might get better purchase.

the new ones have got an allen head on btw.
oo and i tried with a hacksaw on the other one, but it caused more problems than it solved... Embarassed
might just throw them away and make my own iserts for the bar... god knows how im guna do that though... Shocked

Would one of those screw extractor bits do it?
https://www.bikerlifestyle.co.uk/tech/screw/extract.htm

Otherwise ask David Silver spares, think it'll be 'bar inner weights' you'll need.

Use an impact driver to get the screw out whilst holding the bar end (whilst the inner is in the handlbar). Iv used mole grips and turned out the screw on the most stuckest of the stuckest honda ends.

UNDO THE SCREW!
The weight is not the bar end its the bit that goes inside the handle bars, the idea being that it takes the vibration away from the ends of the handle bars and your fingers.
If it rounds, drill it out, how simple could it be!

Is it!!! So why's it called a bar end weight

The weight should be at the end of the bar to absorb any vibrations, but not all bar end weights are what they should be, i.e. heavy ... most of them are just there to make the ends of the bars pretty.

With regards getting the bar end off ...

Most of them use a bit of metal and a rubber blob which is compressed when you turn the screw thereby jamming it in the handle bar ... this sometimes jams, so try squirting a bit of WD40 down the hole and hitting it with a hammer.

Hope you get it sorted ... Barry

Jjust had a look at a spare inner weight & bar end off my CBR400, the inner weight is the only bit that is threaded. The bolt just goes straight through the actual bar end.

Thats why it's notched in a semi circle, to stop the bar end spinning.

The bolt is screwed into the inner weight.

All this of course is relying on the two models bars being similar, which i think they are (due to the prescence of the notches).

So yes, if you hold the bar end still, bacause of the notches, that should hold the inner weight still.

Agree you should have a go with an impact driver, maybe try holding the bar end (or the inner weight so as not to scratch the bar end) in a vice?

The screws are a bastard, but that's what's holding them in. Either an impact driver or an old fashioned hand brace with a screwdriver bit in it should crack it free. Obviously you'll need the other end of the bar held pretty firmly, maybe in a padded vice or similar.

The screw holds the bar end on and in the pic where the arrows point to is a bit of folded steel that holds the inner part in the handle bar. The sticky out bit sticks out into the hole in the bars.

This little clip breaks which is why the inner falls out. The screw doesn't compress the rubber bit.
