Just took my bike in for the (roadworthy) equivalent of your guys mot and it failed, on a tyre, chipped indicator, back brakes,
and the neutral light dosent work properly.

the neutral light is what bothers me as since i rebuilt the gear box, it has not worked properly , If i hold the gear just above 1st , the light will go on and then the bike will drop in to gear,
now the mech for the neutral light seems to work so i am wondering is it possible that it is sitting wrong in the crankcase that it is doing this.

any ideas

What bike is it?

it sounds like there may be a detent on the selector drum that the switch is not sitting in correctly? Is the switch installed correctly into the case (correct size, screwed the whole way in etc?)

bike = gs500 / 93
switch is the origional one that was in there , took it off when i hed to rebuild the engine and then since i put it back on its not right, so i am not sure what is actually going on with it, to be honest i could not give a damn as i wont sell the bike , but have to have it sorted for the road worthy. ( inspections are privately contracted so the guys actually do test the thing)
here is the pic of the gear shifting mech with the switch on the end of it
