How the hell can you tell whats legal and whats not.

Bridleway = not legal - unless walking or on a horse.

RUPP (Road used as public path) or BOAT (By way Open to All Traffic) = legal - as long as taxed insured wearing lid etc:-

Ways to tell - signposts (of course), OS maps ok as long as recent, other than that ask the local council - Hampshire CC have a website with maps showing where you can go and where you can't - or they did a while ago - not been off road a lot recently so have lost touch a bit.

cheers! AB

How the hell can you tell whats legal and whats not.

The type of Byway that interest us bikers are:
Byways Open To All Traffic (BOAT's)
Byways are rights of way for walkers, horse riders, cyclists and vehicular traffic. A traffic regulation order can be made by the County Council to restrict vehicular access along a byway.
This can be considered appropriate when the surface of a byway makes it unsuitable for vehicular use.

Usually marked on maps by red crosses or arrows.

Best to join a local group - as they will know what routes are legal and what you can and cannot do.
But you can also simply buy an ordinance map and then go onto the local council website to see the grid references for BOAT's.
Personally I am going to join the TRF - as its only 40 quid and they already know the routes and of any changes.
We are quite lucky in Surrey, as there are plenty of lanes open.

Going up a bridle way or route that is not open to vehicles could get your bike impounded and crushed - or maybe just chased by an irrate farmer as you trespass on his land Smile
On top of that, it just gives the 'do gooders' more ammunition to use when they are trying to close off the lanes to off-roaders.

Failing that - my mate rides enduro and knows of a farmer on the Surrey/Sussex border that has built 2 or 3 differing level motox tracks on his land - and charges 10 quid for 3 hours riding Smile

On a 1:50000 OS map the BOATS look like this

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On the 1:25000 they are green

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I can do you a copy of Memory Map if you like which has pretty much every OS map on it which you can print out plus loads of other things as well if you like?

On an OS map you're looking for the paths like this: + - + - + -

If doing it 100% by the book you'd be best to check with your local council who'll have a "right of way officer" who'll be able to tell you about where's open and where restriction are currently in place. However its normally quite clear if a byway is closed by the council as they have a habit of putting signs and bollards at the start of the paths as a clue that you're not allowed down them. Despite the large amounts of footpaths and bridleways, walkers and horse riders also like using byways so you kinda need to have it in the back of your mind round the next corner there could be some genius on their horse which is scared of traffic. Rolling Eyes

If you get caught somewhere you're not meant to be then first time you'll be given a warning and the second time they can impound your vehicle. Moral of the story is don't get caught. Wink

Getting some OS maps and marking all the byways with green highlighter is useful since maps have the big advantage that they don't need batteries.

Experience at the not getting caught bit, that one's tried and tested. Wink

Maps, get the Landranger Series ones from pretty much any bookshop or bigger WHSmiths will have them. Amazon have them and there's the Ordnance Survey Map Shop.

https://www.way-finder.co.uk/

Slightly unweildy to use but has a download called Overlay Exporter which can be used to export all the BOATS into Memory Map which is very useful.

Like Silky says, I think joining the TRF will be the thing to do.

Got Memory Map and a Garmin Foretrex 201 and it's feckin good Thumbs Up

Still getting to grips with it but got led around a few new lanes the other day and logged it all in my Garmin.

Not only can you see where you went but you can then follow the route on your Garmin again.

Works for me. Quite basic but good at what it does. You can draw your route freehand on MM and then transfer it to your Foretrex and just follow it.

The foretrex also logs where you have ridden so you can do the reverse.
