Hi

Just done a head gasket on the DR350 engine. When putting back together I was sure I got the cam timing right. It has a locating pin on the cam and two bolts on the cam sprocket that I thought can only line up in one way therefore making it fairly difficult to get it wrong, assuming the cam is lined up with the notch on the cylinder head.

On TDC on compression stroke there is clearance between both rockers.

Anyway I can check to make sure I'm right without stripping the bastard down?

Very gently turn the engine over with a big socket/bar on the alternator nut and if it turns over freely a couple of times then it's fine.
If it was more than the tiniest bit out, the piston would be hitting one of the valves.

What about the timing marks on the fly wheel, do they line up?

If it was 180 degrees out, would it still turn over? Is that even possible?

It does turn over freely.

You need to take the cover off to check properly. Hopefully I've got the right bike Laughing.

Just get the piston at top dead centre using the inspection hole on the stator side cover.
Next put the cam in with the lobes facing down, and put the sprocket on the cam and slip the chain on. there will be a line on the sprocket that should be perfectly horizontal, and a pin in the way on the cam, so the sprocket can only be installed one way.

Once thats done put your camchain tensioner in, and verify once again your still at TDC and that the cam sprocket line is perfectly horizontal.

Why the question, is it not starting?

If you've turned the engine over a few times by hand and it all feels good then stick the plug in and try starting.

Yea thought the sprocket could only go in one way.

Pretty sure it's ok... Where it was put together a few weeks back my memory is mind fucking me!

In your case then there's no such thing as getting the cam "180 out" since the plugs fire on every stroke. As above, turn the engine over at least twice in the correct direction, gently by hand. Line up the T mark on the flywheel and check the cam marks. If the cam marks line up, you got it right.

As a quick check, at TDC on compression the cam lobes should be pointing at roughly 10 and 2 o'clock. At TDC on exhaust, 4 and 8 o'clock.

I'd be worried if there wasn't, as your valves and pistons wouldn't look too good otherwise. This clearance, is what called your valve clearance.

Sorry if you knew that, I cant tell from your post if your questioning it or stating it cause you know it should be right.

Thumbs Up
