broke down twice over the weekend due to the weather been shity and rainy. there is a spark and i think there is fuel getting through but it only coes it in the rain, so basically what happens is the bike will splutter and fart for a bit then when i slow right down it just dies. could this be water in the fuel?
any other suggestions welcome.
i have fallen out with the bike big time and i am considering selling it. so let me know if your interested part ex considerd for an rs50 or similar.
cheers joe

You sure the water isn't causing a short in the HT lead? Perhaps the insulation has broken down?

+1

Unless you left the fuel cap open in the rain.

And its the last time im pushing you home, could of died from that.... Summers coming soon so just leave it Very Happy or rap in a bubble when it rains. Take it apart and spray all the electrics see if that helps.

Cheers Kris Smile

Do you have an after market airfilter, i.e. one of the 'pod' type? If you do it should be what truslack is on about. I would say it is the electrics, spray the plug and lead with wd40.

I bought a 1999 RS50 for £650 including custom paint job, arrow exhaust system.

They are VERY high maintenance bikes (or mine was).

quick check when it stopped working and checked them over in the dry last night.
but yeah the rs50 do you think it could be abit of a scam the way the guy doesnt want to register it even though i offerd him an extra £100?
and how much would the bike devalue when i come to sell it due to it being previously registered abroad.

I'd stear well clear of that bike, its old (comparably) and doesn't list mileage, when it was rebuilt etc.

I'd be buying some ignition sealer and giving the whole lot a good spray.

Although it may spark out of the engine it may not do under load.

Electricity will always travel down the easiest path and once damp with the plug in the engine that could be anywhere except accross the plug's electrodes.

Hi there, the rs you posted a link to that is advertised on ebay is from a guy that i recently bought quite a few parts from. He buys a lot of bikes from italy and breaks them for parts, im almost certain hes not a scammer. He's probably just selling the bike because its too good to break.

Check out his ebay feedback, seems genuine enough to me.

I think most 50's-125's have this problem
As far as im aware, its water getting in the plug/ht lead, has happened to me, and my mates, if i remember the rs50 has the same engine as mine, and the sparkplug gets water in there, what my mates have done is make a waterproove rubber ring or something around the plug, to prevent water getting in.

or your getting water in your carb some how, more likely to be the top suggestion tho bud, as it happens alot!

i had an old bike that used to do the same thing..

wasnt ht lead or anything that i thought of,

it was electrical though, turned out to be water getting into some of the wiring near the light (ignition wiring), caused a short and killed the bike.

hope this may be of use.
