after watching loads of video's of SM's ( especially this vid https://www.dailymotion.com/playlist/x7nqy_jpsv14_motos/video/x3s04q_1007-montee-ospedale_auto )

I've decided that when my cheque comes through from my R1 then I want a moto.

but where do I start?

I don't mind doing a full service every 500 miles etc as it won't be my main transport.

I want something that will scare me shitless. been looking at Husqvarna 610's ( the bike in front on that video is one) and can find them for about 1200 - 1800.

any others to consider?

First off, don't expect Supermotos to be amazingly amazing.
In 98% of cases, a sports bike can do everything a supermoto can - the difference is often more in the lack of power, rather than any possible extra handling ability.

If you want a /really/ serious supermoto, you could be talking even worse service intervals - my Husaberg is reccomended at 3 hours use for serious supermoto use (10 hours for trails use). So that's probably around 150 miles.

It does have what is probably a fairly realistic dry (no fuel) weight of 112kg.
I believe the service intervals aren't quite as bad on newer bikes. Along the similar line of converted competition bikes is the Husqvarna 510 (fair bit less weight than the 610 if I remember), KTM 525/530 EXC, GAS GAS EC range etc.
If you want a particularly interesting bike, go for the bike Husaberg (listed as 650, maybe?) which has more go but the same weight.

More money and there's the new Aprilia, but more weight too.

Converted MX bikes will give even less weight and practicality.

I like the idea of a KTM EXC 300 myself - 2 stroke 300cc enduro bike with around the power of the 500cc bikes, but with weight at a realistic 105kg with electric start - less with just the kick starter.
Would be a great do-it-all on and off road bike I reckon.

If you want a bit longer service intervals, the KTM LC4 range is worth a look - though I'd be considering the 625 and lighter - the basic LC4 is still pretty chunky. The 625 is probably similar to the 610, maybe a little heavier.

Also worth looking at the CCMs amongst others.

So effectively G you are saying , stick some knobbles and adjust the suspension on your R1? , sort of like that guy I met down in France, who had custom knobblies on his R1?

https://www.headgear.org/~cloyce/moto-motivation/adventure.jpg

Still on an R1 conversion there might be a lot of this

Your not listening to me are you Glyn, ive said time and time again on 125ccsb to get the fs650.

Anyway if that doesnt float your boat, what about the sxv450? You can get them for £4000-£4200 brand new (last years stock).

My personal choice would be the sxv450 over anything else at the minute.

I guy I know has a husaberg, the oil and filter change every 3 hours is rediculous, they have to be rebuilt every 1000miles iirc. His one has siezed the swingarm pivot though, apprantly this is common on these bikes.

i want a supermoto sooooo bad.. id sell a kidney if I had too.. I could afford one if I sold my DT but I wont part with it! My dream supermoto is a converted CR500. 500cc 2t Shocked Shocked.

if you dont mind tight service intervals then get whatever is the quickest! else you'll just get bored of it because its not as quick as your R1

out of curiosity, what happened to the R1?.. hope u didnt wreck it in a moment of madness cos imagine what you'll be like on a supermoto.. They make you ride like a complete cock (like in the video Mr. Green )

It got stolen about 4 months after me buying it mate.

had an argument with the insurance company because they said I should have declared a ban that had been removed from my license.

they're finally paying out now though. Thumbs Up

Definitely not the case for all - for me one of the positives of my CCM is it's relatively low power (though now I've played with the carb it's got a bit more go) - it means I can actually feel like I'm using the bike a bit, rather than the bike making it all too easy to go fast.

Oh and I believe his R1 got nicked.

seems like a good deal for £1500. the supermoto wheels alone are worth 500 new.

Price doesn’t seem to bad, but do remember you’re looking at a full-on competition motorcross bike. It’s designed to do a race or too, then be stripped and poked over the next weeks. This definitely isn’t a get-to-work bike. Forget how many gears you get on this, some have only 4, but think this should be 5 at least.

Korn has a YZF-based supermoto and while it’s definitely good fun, I’d probably go for something a bit more towards comeptition enduro – for a start, my Husarberg has a fair bit higher top speed just because you can actually fit the sprockets in, where they don’t on the mx-based bike. Enduro bikes tend to be designed for road stuff from the off which also makes ownership a bit less hassle.

Much as I go on about keeping supermotos ‘super’, I’d still say that 99% of people won’t make use of the extra a supermoto offers and the 1% that do will probably only do it 1% of the time – the real advantage of something like this is that weight probably comes in at around 100kg with everything but fuel – so easily half a modern sports bike.
That means with grippy tyres you should be able to get some pretty ridiculous lean angles and the like – however how many chances do most get to do this when not on track – and even do make use of it on a trackday.
Conversly, though, having a ridicoulsly light bike of course does make it that bit easier and more tempting to ride like a twat generally Very Happy.

Just noticed the road wheels look to be from a road bike - so worth a lot less than £500 I suspect element. Unless you're planning on doing dirty stuff on them too, it shouldn't be a big issue having cast wheels.
Is a positive that you get off road wheels too - much more fun to my mind - try it and you might find you like it Very Happy.

hadnt actually noticed they were cast wheels. saw the small pic on ebay and guessed they were talon/excel setup with black spokes Embarassed.. Still though ur getting the wheels in with the package that are already setup (correct spacers etc). thats alot of hassle saved. Then you got the original wheels for the muddy days Mr. Green Thumbs Up

thats what i was thinking. they look sweet Mr. Green Ive got a set of tzr wheels that I was considering fitting to my dt but I wouldnt mind getting a hold of a set of RS instead as they look way better! Thumbs Up Only problem is the stock rear sprocket is 57t.. will take lots of messing about with sprocket ratios to get close to original..

for light and flicky, he doesnt need a supermoto

a commuter-moto will be fine

(ie supermoto style but reasonable service intervals)

how about a ccm 604 ?

Not really if he wants 'light'.
Might as well just get a streetfigtered sportsbike in a lot of cases, which weigh around about the same as main stream commuter crop and be pretty 'flickable' too.

The CCM604 is a bit of an iffy choice for a commuter bike as it's well known to need good and fairly regular maintenace. The latter (and slower) suzuki engined 644 should have a fair bit better reliability.

I've been looking into the newer TE610 recently and I'm quite liking it for various reasons, however it's still fairly lardy at around 140 'real' dry kg. Whether this will actually be that big an issue is another matter on the road of course, where a lot of people /do/ like the commutermotos.

Think it's 1500 mile service intervals for the 660 (as opposed to 3000 miles for the post 2003 625s, I think), but if you can handle that and the lack of 'lectrict boot, it's definitely worth considering as a mid-way between light and reliable.
