Just curious if anyone has ever done this to get back to steel?

Perhaps the layers of copper and nickel might be a problem??

No immediate need but whenever I've tried to rescue a chromed item by painting over it, the residual chrome is a damned nuisance.

I think people often media blast it to give a textured surface before painting, also gets rid of any loose bits.

Cooncil Salt always works for me.

As Stinkers suggested.

Never tried it or heard of it but reverse anodisation will work.

I worked for a hard chroming company.

Putting chrome on was their business but the reverse may be possible by swaping the current.

Car battery charger as a power supply I think. (Going from previous internetary.)

When I got my CT90 (many years ago, in several boxes) the rear rack that came with it was about 50/50 chrome and surface rust. I had it blasted and powdered silver which came out looking quite good, certainly enough so that I never bothered spending £££ to import a shiny one from the US to replace it.

There are companies that will do it for a price,
apparently it involves nasties so not really a good/safe DIY project.
As long as its not forks, abrasion, prime and paint has worked for me
