What is best for a first bike or what is your personal favourite?

they're both pretty much the same. except the (newer, 05 i think) YBR is fuel injected and the CG has spokes not alloys or whatever the YBRs wheels are.

get whichever one you prefer - newer YBRs tend to sell for more.

As said their isn't much to pick between them if you're looking at the newer CG's (Older ones have drum brakes on the front). But the YBR hasn't been around for that long so like for like bikes age wise are going to be very similar.

I started out on the YBR and it was fine. If I was you I'd be looking at both bikes equally trying to find the best deal available. Thus increasing your odds of finding a decent bargain.

The Yamaha YBR125 is made in China.

The Honda CG125 is made in Brazil.

The Yamaha YBR125 has build quality and reliability issues compared to the near bullet proof reliability of the Honda CG125.

at least thats what I have read from people posting in forums.

Hardly anything between the two. except IMO i think the YBR looks nicer. with its nice back-lit dials and fuel injection. Though the CG tends to be more reliable.
Sit on both, and see which you like best.

I preferred the YBR over the CG, but that's probably biased as I've ridden a YBR more. Although I do think the YBR looks better.

I would probably go for the YBR

But have a sit on them both first also check out the insurance on both also see what deal you can get and the 1 that offers the best go for as you wont have it forever

I think the YBR has a better resale value btw

I can not confirm or deny if the Yamaha resale value is higher than the Honda.
Thats because the websites that list the 2nd hand values the bikes are actually sold for does not list the YBR125.

When I see shops advertising 2nd hand ones I thought the Honda and Yamaha were almost identical in price.

I am a little concerned about how many people have posted on this thread who own or have owned a Yamaha YBR125.
And they only have nice things to say about it.
If you do a little searching on this forum you will find some old posts about owners who do not have all nice things to say about it.

The only thing everyone seems to agree with is the Yamaha looks better.
I seem to be the only one who prefers the look of the current model Honda CG125 over the Yamaha.
The curves of the Honda CG125 look really nice in metallic silver.

Well once you cease your seemingly irrational hate campaign can you let me know!

Here's some more detail for you. I owned a 2nd hand 05 YBR and it was faultless. Purchased with 1200miles on the clock I rode it through winter and put 4000k miles on it which isn't a huge amount, but never the less it never missed a beat. Started first time every time, not a single fault other than a snapped clutch cable and that can happen on any bike. The only negative point I have to say about it is that the tyres aren't the best, but this can be easily remedied. I managed perfectly fine on the stock tyres and never suffered any disastrous consequences even when riding through some thoroughly awful weather.

Here's mine after two winters just before I sold it:

Finally can I just say that a naked 125 4 stroke is never going to look cool whatever spin you put on it and pretty much should be forgotton. Buy a bike on spec, history, condition but not looks!

Much the same I'd think. The Yam wins for me as it is still be imported into the UK (emissions laws have killed the CG apparently) Has fuel injection and a tachometer and might be marginally cheaper.

Also there seems to be better deals on the Yam sometimes, a local garage is doing a new one with free insurance for £1800.

Saying that I learnt to ride on a CG, lovely little bike and so many tales of mega miles/reliability.

I love my '05 YBR, got nearly 7k miles on it now since buying it second hand with 600 miles on the clock. The only issue I had was with the front light flickering but that was due to dirt getting into the switch - easily remedied with a squirt of WD40. The stock tyres on the '05 model are crap - the back wheel locks if you fart in the general direction of the brake pedal! So with a pair of Pirelli City Demons, it rides nicely. It took me through the second half of last winter nicely and I expect it to do well this winter.

Truth be told, if I'd have found a CG first, I'd have bought that, but the YBR just happened to be close to me when I was looking for a bike after doing my CBT. I certainly don't regret choosing it. I don't think you'd go wrong with either bike. Thumbs Up

Your not the only one with a YBR125 whoes clutch cable snapped. Several other people have posted on the internet the same problem.
Yes it does happen on other bikes but it seems to be happening at an early age and low mileage on the YBR125.
I personally think its a sign of Chineese metal quality.

Has anybody noticed that I am the only one with a Honda CG125 on this thread?
I assume the other Honda CG125 owners decided to stay away becasue to many YBR125 owners are around.

Anyway I do not want an argument.

I would advise anyone reading and thinking about which bike to ask a motorcycle instructor for advice. They should have experiance with both bikes.

Right. i DID own a 2001 OLD SHAPE (the classic "vintage" style) cg125 with the old 4 speed all down box...i loved it, was VERY upset tht it's written off (i got knocked off it from the rear by a woman doin 70mph), i'd buy another in a second, best bike i ever rode.

I TRIED to ride my cbt on a NEW SHAPE cg125...which i found to be just awful, underpowered, too high up, WAAAAYYY to much stopping power on front brakes, which kept locking, bike felt unsafe, so i asked instructor for a different bike.....

I DID my cbt on a 2006 YBR 125, which was wonderful to ride, nice tourque-y engine, sounded quite nice, gearbox was pleasant and smooth, handled really superbly, U-turns were a doddle.

If you cn get an OLD shape CG, go for that, ANY day...if not..AVOID the new shape......and get a YBR.

Well, tht's wot i think anyway.

Can I be so blunt as to say that its probably down to lack of maintenance?

A clutch cable snapping is hardly the mark of "chineese" metal quality, when you consider most cables for all models come out of the same factory!

I dunno whether you aint passed your test or what but christ Ybr or Cg. same difference! learner bike not trackday tool.

Take the option thats best for you! if you get a cheap Cg, great run it for 6months then sell it, simular with the Ybr.

Just go for the cheapest option, initial purchase and insurance, get an old shed that moves.

Is it the front disc and rear drum on the newer CG's?

Both drum brakes on my CG, not the best brakes I must admit but least they're balanced!

I did my CBT on a CG, and thought it was GREAT!

Then i bought my own bike, which was broken the week before the test, so I had to borrow a CG from my riding school

It felt like a bag of shit after riding my own bike

I've never ridden a YBR, but I know I like my Yamaha, the honda buttons felt a bit rubbish (PUSH to KILL! going over and over in my head on the test)

So I would say the YBR, even though I've never ridden one.
