Rotherhams new bike test center had five tests today. four of those candidates failed with two of the four crashing and one of the those ending up in hospital.
A few instructors were saying that the high speed avoidance manoeuver was dangerous in the wet.
Best of luck to all those yet to take the new test just hope it not raining for you. ____________________ I ride way too fast to worry about cholesterol.

Haha oh lord. Let's hope that remains an isolated case.
And yeah, I can see what they mean. Still dependant on experience though I guess unless it has to be done in a certain way that could be deemed as dangerous in the wet.. ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

Haha.
Still, I guess if this occurs quite often (crashing on the test in the rain) then they may have to rethink that portion of the test. ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."

But a lot of the time the roads we ride on are wet.......
So in reality doing this in the wet is the best test yet, for bike control....
It is pointless people passing the test, because its too easy. Only then to become a statistic when something happens, due to the fact they are unable to control their bike in the wet....
Perhaps if ALL instructors were saying something, it might be looked at.
Maybe they should have a go and see how they find it, before passing comment.
The only issue would be if the tarmac is not upto the same grip quality as the roads, or is so new its still seeping oil in the wet.... ____________________ Just because my bike is DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

I just knew before even clicking that this was sarcasm. And it's supposed to be difficult to infer sarcasm from typed text. Must be because it's related to the new test and pretty much every bit of news about it is bad ____________________ "Money doesn't buy you happiness, it just buys you a better class of misery" - Someone's Gran

Looking at the diagram, if a person (me) had to do it without stopping I'd just forget where I was in the process. My memory might be shit but my riding isn't to bad, (which is to say; I'm still alive after 3 years...)
Who's done a test in the wet? Or will they start cancelling tests if it's damp as they won't be able to administer that part effectively.
Like the car test, its not the best method. 40 odd minutes under test circumstances focusing on doing things by rote. An extended test (not unlike the CBT) would be far more useful, (would be my view...)

I did my test in the snow. I came off in the snow 2 years later. The test doesn't mean you are a fully fledged biker, it's only there to give you a head start on learning how to ride.
I was speaking to an instructor about this some time ago, and he said it's going to be impossible to teach people that part of the test. I'm sure when more accidents start happening it will get scrapped.
'High speed avoidance' is more down to luck than skill, that's why the test is there to teach you about obs. I've had a few 'nearlys' due to poor obs (we all do sometimes), and I can honestly say that if you asked me to replicate the maneuvers I have done, I wouldn't be able to. Split second decisions are just that, instinct takes over. |

| No doubt they can claim its all for the good in improving safety on the road. Now all they've got to do is get the off road safety bit right. |

Surely these kind of manoeuvres come with experience? Because a new rider has probably just got used to riding properly let alone doing more difficult things. ____________________ Bikes : 2000 RS125 never worked! (SOLD) - 2006 CBR125R (SOLD) - 2004 Monster 620ie (Current)

well said
i would say what you learn on the test only counts for a small fraction of what a 'biker' needs to know to stay alive. ____________________ 04 NSR 125(sold) ---- 03 CBR 600rr ----90 pan euro ST1100 ' ' ----02 CG 125

While it is true the roads are wet sometimes, the idea is that when conditions are poor you take account of it and increase you margins for error. As such giving someone the same manoevre test in the wet as they would be given in the dry seems a bit pointless.
Or to turn your argument on its head, the roads are often wet, so why should people be given an easier test when they happen to have it on a dry day?
All the best

I was just gonna say the same Keith. If it's wet then surely is should be a not-so-high-speed avoidance maneuver. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

that course doesn't actually look too hard, just remembering it would be a cnut though, would be ok if it was painted on all the floors instead of just cones, they all just fade into 1 big blur sometimes
moaning about having a wet test is a bit stupid imo, if you're not confident enough to take a wet test then you shouldn't be riding, what if you get caught in a massive down pour? (happened to me 3 times before i took my test which probably helped me pass)
the only hard thing for a new rider would be the slalom bit and even that should be a doddle, before i took my test i used to slalom between drains just for avoidance practise
best thing about it is that you don't have to do the u-turns and E-stops on the public roads where you can get failed cause some idiot speeds down the road
maybe the 4 who failed were just massively incompetent? ____________________ CBT PASSED 18/01/09 THEORY PASSED 14/04/09 DAS PASSED 17/04/09 3 minors wet test.
