Since pug205ers got his XR I've decided I want to get back into offroad again Laughing

After a cheap XR400.. possibly a 250. Looking at something around 1998 age, don't like the old ones!.. seen loads selling on ebay for around £800 in good condition and road legal so thats around my budget... let me know what you got.

I'd go for the 400 if I were you out of those, especially if you're going to do a bit of road work.

Also, I'd be looking at a stroker of some sort.

Look in completed items, theres loads sold for under a grand.

Secondly I have way more cash than that, but realistically don't want to spend any more than a grand as it's coming out of my house deposit!

I will get one for a grand or less. IF not then gas gas EC300's , 2000-2002 models are on there for £1000 mark.

If I had to spend more than a grand I'd just go for another WR400/426/450 .. I loved my last one a lot.

Well I should have said my budget is £1000, I said £800 as id seen a few sell for £800 mark in the completed listings.. my budget is actually £1000 though.

Slightly tempted by an EC300 thats on there for £900 but not sure I want a 2 stroke again.. my last bike was an 06 KTM 300 EXC , great bike but I got on with my 525EXC and 400F better which is why I'm swaying to 4 strokes again.

Well .. every time someone posts like this, I reply with the comment that "£1000, or £1300 (if you can push it), is the way to go for a decent off roader ".
At this point G (or similar experienced forum member) pipes in with "pah, I can get a good off roader for £600!".
And each time I go sprinting off to ebay to try and find one ... and never do. Rolling Eyes

You will be very very lucky to find a bike that doesnt need £300 spending on it for less than 1k.
Any bikes that are £700 or £800 will all require a few hundred to spend on them .. thus taking them to the 1k region.

The way to go is a 1999/2000 WR400F or WR426.
Picked mine up for £1300 a year ago ... probably worth 1k now !?
Seen lots go on ebay for about 1k.
Solid engines ... plenty of power ... a bit heavy compared to the strokers, but lots of engine breaking ... easy to ride and look good. Thumbs Up

Got my TTR250 for £875 with T + T and it hasn't missed a beat in 18 months of (ab)use.

Marie, my girlfriend, has just picked up a Serow with T + T till next year for £950.

Reckon Silky's right - budget at the grand mark and then hope to pick up one for a £100 less if you're lucky Very Happy

I had a 2001 WR400F before, and have extensively ridden an 02 WR426F... I love the bike a lot, I think I might wait a few weeks and just go for another one, think I'll regret getting something else, I really got on with the WR's.

Woo happy days

Having said all of the above .. just seen a 1998 elec start ttr250 with 2 days to go on ebay and no bids.. at £500. Shocked
Has no MOT though ... so I suspect it will need brake pads and tyres and maybe a few other bits ... all bound to total £150 incl price of mot.

So ... will keep an eye on it, and if it goes for anything under £800 then I will video myself eating one of G's old touring socks.
However, if it goes for over that, then I rest my case, and wish to hear no more of this "good bikes for under a grand malarkey"

Looks really good condition though Shocked Very Happy
May put in a sneaky bid myself.

That does look tidy - if it continued to have no bids you'd be laughing...needs a bash plate though, and headlight off the Open Enduro model, cos the one it has is fugly (and doesn't look like it'd crash as well)....

I've just had fun trying to get a bike for that sort of budget. I managed to get mine off another forum by googling in the end. Most of the bikes I found that were within budget were 'well used' and miles away, so getting to give them a good look over before buying would have been difficult. As it was I was lucky as mine was delivered to nearer home because the guy was buying another bike down this way. 1993, only 200cc but very tidy and 12 months MOT'd and tax.

I got my scruffy tt250r for £500 and had no problems with it.

A mate bought a prettier one for £2k or thereabouts and he had to fix something to do with the starter motor.

price is often more of an indication of prettyness than anything else

arguably mine was better, as it had a lowing link in the rear suspension

ttr's go for little money because they are sloooow.. not much quicker than a DTR... also the starter motors are known to have issues (once its starts making funny noises people get shot of there ttr because repairing them is pricey!).. Its well documented on ttr250.com.

Also for the money I would get a WR or if you wanted an XR then get the 400..

Hopefully viewing that XR440 on Thursday if he's still got it, fingers crossed looks ideal to get me out green laning with the SE lot Laughing

BTW Silky, £800 might have been a bit optimistic, but £950 still seems pretty good to me, I just wanted change from a grand so as to not take too much from the house deposit!
