I just bought the CCM 644 advertised by Jenks.

Basically the fuelling is shot. I'm just going to put it out there that I don't know much about how a carb works, I'm more of a brakes, wiring and suspension home mechanic, anything inside a carb or an engine is unknown to me.

Right. With the standard can on, the bike backfires a lot and splutters, crack open the throttle in first gear, should in theory throw the front up in the air, but it kind of hits a brick wall.

Jenks said to me when he sold it that it had been jetted for an aftermarket, but he had no idea to what or for what. So I stuck the aftermarket slipon can on, and the performance is better, but still horribly out. The interesting thing about the slip on can, is that it backfires on every stroke on the overrun. I noticed it does it less with half choke, and only the occasional bang with full choke.

I'm giving it to my friend who is an apprentice mechanic to take the carb apart and have a look, but I just wondered if anyone could explain how I could (firstly understand what they are) fettle with the main jets, pilot jet and mixture screw.

Cheers
Pyro

why not just buy a new, standard pilot and main jet, fit them, set the pilot screw to standard and go from there.

This is the overall plan, however I've only had the bike since thursday, and only ridden it about 100 miles, mostly commuting.

Stock pipe and stock jetting is the best place to start.
