The enclosed crank (and thus not needing petroil lubrication I presume) is interesting, but presumably this could be transferred to a conventional round engine - though sealing would maybe be harder.
For any serious performance I suspect the corners would introduce too many problems.

Maybe you could use piston rings on the top and bottom of the piston. Only gave it a quick thought though and you'll probably have the issue of oil leaking out of the ports.

Interesting idea, very compat. You could make it a flat twin and not make the engine much bigger, which would also overcome any balance problems - just extend the piston down, so you in effect have a rectangular double ended piston with a hole in the middle for the crank to run in.

He said it's not been used before, but I've seen a diagram of something very similar before.

Possibly a pump rather than an engine.
