We are aiming for a 1300mm wheelbase, though it may go up to 1400mm.

that twin 250 kart is a one off kart made by an irish guy. it is super fast but the only problem is he cant actually race it because there isn't a class for it.
most of us race with a single 250cc sinle or twin cylinder enigne which rev quite high. not sure on the exact revs. the other gearbox class is 125 which we use very high tuned 125cc engine specially made for karting. ours is tuned to 48bhp which we would say is probably the highest bhp 125 in the country at the moment (in karting i mean). we rev usually to abiout 14 grand but have seen 16 no problem. poeple have put a fire blade engine onto a kart before and the 250's killed it in a race not sure why but they did.
Anyway i'm goin now hope you get it sorted and what ever you do run good tyres and front brankes are a must.

Craig.

what size diameter is the rear axle that your using? looks like a 30mm to me which will be to small. Go for a 40mm axle or even a 50mm. you will be surprised how easy they bent. we bent 2 just doin standing starts and they were 50mm ones!

It's 30mm but it's a hardened solid one, not the hollow tube type.

i'd still go for a 40 or 50 mm one though. they really rn't that strong. i've got one in my 100cc and bent that easily enough.

Just a quick one korn! The sprocket on the engine looks very close to the axel?

How are you going to get a sprocket on the axel? Also if its that close then surely the gearing isn’t going to be right, I mean the acceleration 0-60 in 2 minutes! Shocked

This is just an observation, you may have this sorted, I don’t know.

Don't forget how small the wheels are STU. It will make a hell of alot of difference, no matter how much the kart will be upgeared.

They are going to have a sprocket on that axel and another axel connected to a chain that connects to the engine. I think? Dont worry Stu im sure Kornel knows what he's doing Smile

At the moment it looks like there will be two intermediate sprockets, so the chain will travel from the gearbox sprocket to the first itermediate, via a short shaft rotating in a bearing to the second intermediate, then via chain again to the axle sprocket.

This way we can get away with using gearbox sprockets everywhere. The gearing options would be as follows:

15-17 / 14-17 = 137 Mph
14-17 / 14-17 = 127 Mph
14-18 / 14-18 = 114 Mph
14-17 / 12-17 = 109 Mph
14-18 / 12-18 = 97 Mph
12-17 / 12-17 = 94 Mph
12-17 / 12-18 = 88 Mph ( Laughing )
12-18 / 12-18 = 83 Mph

The other option is to remove the output shaft from the engine and machine a new, longer one - that way it would clear the engine and we could get away with a straight sprocket drive. I don't think we're going to do that though, as it would involve dismantling basically the whole motor.

This is the first proper engineering project any of us have worked on, so certain bits are going to be more scrapheap challenge than formula 1 - but we should end up with a fekkin quick little vehicle Wink

* * * PLS TAKE NOTE * * *

Korn, according to this picture, you'll have some problem with the way you joining the 2 hollow-section member.

I'm in Civil Engineering, we study Structure Analysis, Steel Design(minimum material for maximum loading), Enviromental & transportation.

I've no idea what are the loading is for the structure you're making, and what are the safety factors and materials you're putting in. BUT, one thing for sure, the way you're connecting a joint in this way is * * * VERY WEAK * * *.

What i'm trying to say is, with the same quality of material, if you join it in the right way, you can load/hold ***AT LEAST*** 5 more times than the one you've done right now.

Here's one of the structure i've buildt, it's part of our corse. It contains of

Member's dimension : 13mm x 13mm x 1mm Aluminium angels
Plate's Diemnsion : 1mm thick Aluminium plate(i used double plate, so let's make it 2mm thick)
Rivet's Dimention : 3mm diameter rivet

The whole structure has a dimension of about 900mm in length, 300mm in height, and 250mm in width. It weights 1.2kg if i'm not wrong, but pls have a guess, how much can it be loeded up before it failed?

Answer is :
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
it was loaded up to 300kg(3 kN), yet it havent failed, and it was designed for 600kg(6kN) loading according to my calculation. It's juz too bad that the hydraulic pump in the lab was sent to maintainence, else we could test it up to 1200kg(12 kN) and crumple the whole thing.

That joint pictured is going to be taking the weight of the engine, with the force pushing down on it from the angle it sits at in the pic. If it was sideways force then yeah I agree it would be pretty weak (the bracket is 2mm steel) but since the upright sits right on the crossbeam I can't see any way to make it stronger. Can you explain?

Btw, all the joints are going to be welded before use - the bolts are there mainly to hold it together during construction and to provide an extra bit of safety once everything is welded up.

Nice arch by the way, have you played Pontifex? If not, give the demo a try - I think you'd like it.
