Hi there I had been told this was possible to change this engine from 6 volt to 12v?

The engine is on a go kart so no need for lights etc

Anyone done this? And what materials do I need

Thanks for looking

If there's no need for it to power lights and accessories ect...
Why bother?
I mean only other thing electrics are doing is running the ignition, in which case what difference does it make?

Changing it from 6v to 12v won't get you a spark if your wiring is a mess, best to rip all the wiring out and do it from scratch with just the wires you need. Once the lights and horn are ignored, there's very little left.

Just put a step down before you hit any of the original parts on your own made wiring loom ?

You need the red wire on the coil to go to battery +ve and the green wire on the coil to go to the points under the cover.

You also need to make sure there is an good earth (battery -ve, engine, coil) and it would be best to add a kill switch (aka, a loose bit of wire connected to the coil green wire which you can touch to the battery -ve to stop the engine)

Finally, you need to make sure you have the thing marked "capacitor" connected between the coil green wire and ground.

Battery won't charge but engine should run.

Ok, coil should have two terminals on it, hopefully marked "+" and "-".

+ goes to the battery +ve. convention says this wire is red.
- goes to the points and to the capacitor and also go to your kill switch. Usually all 3 are green wires.

Then everything needs earthed. should spark!

No markings = trial and error Smile
