Firstly, I must stress that I don't know the legality of doing this for road purposes, but mine is for 'track' purposes. Therefore you do this at ENTIRELY YOUR OWN RISK!

I was looking for ages to find a cheap tinted visor. I ideally wanted a pinlock insert as this meant that it was easily removed. It was hard enough trying to find a tinted normal visor, let alone a pinlock insert. So I decided to make my own!

First thing I did was buy myself another pinlock. This one was for the next couple of months where I need an un-tinted one for road use Wink.

You want to thoroughly clean the visor with a dab of washing up liquid. I used my fingers to clean any dirty of as they are soft lol. Then rinse with water, and dry using kitchen roll or similar:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/IMG00051-20110206-1648.jpg

After you have dried the visor, you want to cut the tint film to shape. I used this film here:

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MIRROR-GOLD-PRO-WINDOW-TINT-FILM-51cm-X-1m-/250507077429?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3a5362a735

I can honestly say its great to work with, and not to expensive either.

Anyways, leave yourself about an inch of spare film around the shape of the visor. I used a knife to mark the film where I wanted to cut:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/IMG00052-20110206-1648.jpg

And scissors to make the actual cut. This worked well, so I would recommend this:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/IMG00053-20110206-1650.jpg

Then you need to peel a corner of the protective film off to reveal the adhesive side of the film (This makes sense when you actually get the film). Then add washing up liquid and a little water to the side of the visor you want to tint:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/IMG00054-20110206-1652.jpg

This bit is really hard to explain but basically you want the film to be between the pinlock and the actual visor when its in the helmet (I got this wrong side in mine so I had the film on the inside bit by accident), more on that later). That way the film is being stretched rather than compressed when the visor is in the helmet and it helps get rid of any air bubbles.

Then peel off the rest of the protective film and put the adhesive side down on top of the washing up liquid and water. This is where this film is great, as its not a one shot deal. You have a load of time to smooth out any bubbles. The washing up liquid and water activate the glue, giving you some time before it sets. After you are happy there are no bubbles, get a load of old magazines and stack them on top of the visor like this:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/IMG00056-20110206-1659.jpg

Then after an hour or so, take the mags off and trim around the edges with the scissors. I then put it into my helmet to stretch it out. This is when I realised I would have been better tinting the other side (in-between the pin lock and visor). It looks like this:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/IMG00057-20110206-2004.jpg

However, the joy wit this film is its actually universal. So from the outside you see this:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/IMG00058-20110206-2005.jpg

If I turn the pin lock around, you would see the gold tint on the outside (I will do this when it dries properly).

Basically, I can chose between a mirror effect and a gold effect. The film reflects light from either side in the same way. From the inside of the visor, it just feels like your wearing sunglasses.

In my opinion its a pretty good job tbh. Considering the visors for my helmet I were looking at came in around £50, this has cost me the price of the film + just a standard antifog insert which can be bought for pennies. The end result looks pretty professional. I am really impressed!

Nice job on the walk-through. Karma

I normally order my helmets from racevisors so get the free tint with it then - wouldn't mind doing a gold one though as they want £40 for em Surprised

This was the problem I was having. Racevisors didn't have the ones for my helmet though, and the only other one I could find was an iridium tint, but that was £56 Shocked.

I had an iridium one before on my old helmet, never again though. They get scratched so easily, so just stick to black visors atm.

Surely you want the whole visor to be tinted though, not just the pinlock?

And you reckon it would work with mx lenses? They are about £20 and I know that aint too steep but... Laughing

I only wanted the pin lock as that way, if I got stopped by the police for it, I could remove it easily and carry the clear pin lock under my seat. Its just a simple swap over. The full visor is a pain the ass to store, and I couldn't find one to suit my needs anyways. Most of the tinted ones didn't have the pin lock attachments, so I couldn't Have an anti-fog insert, and for commuting.. this was going to be a pain in the ass!

Yeah, it will work quite nicely I would imagine. Give it a go! Its only £7 for the film!

Yeah, I get what you mean.

You could always tint the ones you have at the minute and if you get stopped or something, just pull the tint off?

Depends if you commute or Sunday ride Razz?

You can buy pre cut ones on ebay if I recall correctly. Pin lock shaped ones too, but these things aren't that great.

I thought you found a dye spray or something! :p

Why not just buy a pre tinted Pinlock?

Couldn't find a mirrored pinlock like I wanted for my helmet. Racevisors had the basic ones, and a light smoke, but nothing more than that sadly Sad

Any dark tint will be for track use only. Think the legal limit is a max of 50% LTF, and given a clear visor is 20% LTF near enough. You can see how little tint is required to get to the limit.

So a picky officer could pull you. Most won't.

If you ride with a dark tint, be prepared to carry a clear visor for nighttime, or just in case you do get pulled.

I have a idea that you won't get a mirrored pinlock, as the mirror coating needs to be on the outside to work best. And given how easily scratched the surface is, it would not last long.

Yeah. I bought a new one that has silicone around it for everyday use. The silicone helps seal the air pocket, meaning its less prone to steaming up.

Then I used the old one for this.

And yeah, I totally agree with iooi. The advantage with the pinlock is you could remove it at the side of the road if needed to travel in the dark or if you got pulled. If I used it on the road I would always carry the spare clear one, as its only 30second job to change them.
