First post so bear with me!

So the fazer was suffering from a common cam chain rattle, took it to the garage and sent away with advice to "rev it up a bit n it'll quieten down".

Be warned, what actually happened was the cam chain came off on the dual carriageway! So now im faced with a engine strip and rebuild. Today I took the panels, battery, carbs, distributor/coolant pump bracket, cam chain tensioner and cam cover off. No signs of any damage on top but the cam chain is stuck...will take the head off tomorrow and work my way down to the crankshaft to find the culprit. More to follow!

Good luck.

I did the top end on mine and the thread can be detailed here:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=207665&highlight=fazer+oil+leak

Nice engines to work on actually, the top end was pretty easy to do without to many problems. Only real major issue was setting the timing, but neither me or my dad had done it before and we weren't going to get it wrong Very Happy.

Pics, and keep us posted!

Mine rattles at very cold temperatures, but goes after about 1 minute. Doesn't do it when warm, I'm not overly worried.

Garth, this was a constant rattle from start up to revving. Got progressively worse then SNAP! I would advise anyone to trust their instincts and if it sounds bad it probably is!

Pics to follow this evening.

Well after stripping the head and block off I can say that it is definitely f*$ked. Piston 2 (sitting on the bike L to R) was stuck in the barrel whilst the rest turned over. Con rod has snapped taking off a chunk of the barrel wall as well Sad guna be surfing eBay for parts i reckon... more pics to follow as i attempt a repair!

scottyboy - how you getting on with this job?

Its stories like this that make me struggle to not worry about the squeaks, rattles and rasps my 30k fazer makes whenever I jump on it. Thing is I've now got a 1989 er250 hack that makes me realise how wonderfully smooth and modern the old fazer is.....
