There's only one size of plate that is legal. In fact, there is no legal plate size specifically, but you have to use certain sized characters with certain spacing and a certain minimum border, which (for a normal reg number) adds up to (IIRC) approximately 7"x9".

Just as a matter of interest, I believe that the size of your plate is irrelevant in terms of the law, it's the size of the letters/numbers and spacing that is covered in the legislation.

DVLA Rules for Motorcycle and Tricycle number plates
All motorcycles and tricycles must display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle. Motorcycles and tricycles registered before 1st September 2001 may display a number plate at the front of the vehicle but are not required to.

If you have a two or three wheeled motorcycle or tricycle that has a body type of a four-wheeled vehicle, you MUST display a number plate at the front and back of the vehicle.

Motorcycles registered on or after 1st September 2001 must display a two-line number plate. Motorcycles registered before 1st September 2001 may display a three-line number plate.
One-line number plates are illegal, regardless of the date of registration.

Here are the character sizes:

Character Height 64 mm
Character Width (except the figure 1 or letter I) 44 mm
Character stroke 10 mm
Space between characters 10 mm
Space between groups 30 mm
Top, bottom, and side margins (minimum) 11 mm
Space between vertical lines 13 mm

My OH has been done for an illegal plate - he was followed for some time by a bike cop who was unable to calibrate any speeds (although they were well over legal). Once he was stopped they did a full pnc check on him and the bike which of course came bac clean. So the guy got a pair of calipers out and measured the letters on his (home-made) plate. Turned out they were 2mm too small.

I see a lot of bikes with the 7"x5" size plates on
so i am guessing as long as the letters are big enough its fine?

No.

However chances of you getting busted for an 8 x 6 or 7 x 5 are prety slim provided the lettering's a reasonable size.

As stated 9x7 is the "legal" / MOT size

However I had a 8x6 on the GPZ for 2 years with no problems...
and I have a 7x5 on the Bandit for the past years and a half, and never been pulled
(although I tend to re-fit the original 9x7 plate when it comes to MOT day Wink )

Agree with the above. 9"x7" (or very nearly) is the only legal size. The consensus seems to be that you won't get pulled for an 8"x6" or even 7"x5", but if you do get pulled by Pc ShoulderChip for the crime of Annoying a Constable, then he'll do you for the plate if he can't find anything else to pin on you.

Personally I use 9"x7" and try not to worry about the hordes of cool hot biker chicks laughing at my stupid giant legal plate. I mean, since you can't see the plate when you're riding, I assume that's the incentive to fit a tiddler. Neutral

Love the pillion pegs, looks like it's got a flopped ear....

That lettering can't be legal? Or is there no requirements as to font?

Was having a look at my rear number plate issue today, and decided i need a different rear light and a new bracket which i will mount higher and then give me more clearance for a legal plate.

searching cafe racer brings up all sorts of rear light options which has just got me even more confused on which one to get Confused

https://i.ebayimg.com/00/$(KGrHqUOKi8E1KgJDFBLBNjPbwS!Zw~~0_12.JPG

was thinking maybe something like this, i could cut the rear hump of the seat and have it poking out?

Its all there.

A legal number plate size is NOT stated. Its all about the text sizing and layout, so the minimum plate size is dependant on those being applied to the number of characters and the age / type of the vehicle.
