So I had a look yesterday as the chain looked loose. Turns out it had some nasty tight spots. Seeing as the weather is shit this week, I've whipped it off and am soaking it in some old oil I've got to try and free it up. It's seen better days as was in a really sorry state when I got the bike.

The rear sprocket looks okay but not great, and haven't had a chance to look at the front yet, but I was going to give everything a clean and check it was all ok.

Now I remember reading a while back that there was a problem with the Fazer, and the output shaft. I can't quite remember what happened but it was along the lines of the nut could come off?

I also remember reading that the standard nut was safe to be torqued up to something like 80lbs to stop it happening? When the time came to change the C & S you could buy the new type nut which was supposed to stop it from happening.

Can someone that understands the problem explain it to me a bit better? Apparently the worst case is the thread on the output shaft can be stripped? Also I've been reading I need to measure the output shaft? What for?

The front sprocket has a tab washer behind it to stop it moving on the shaft.
The torque setting is 70 Nm.

Problem is they still fail. It's a common fault.

might be worth asking on https://fazerowners.yuku.com/

sure somebody on there will know the remedy

hope mine doesn't come off though Shocked

I've had a read there but I can't find the details. The MODS bit doesn't work for me anymore. Any time I try to click on the modification bit it just crashes out saying the page is unavailable.

I'm going to ask Chris, as I'm pretty sure he knows the details.

If you're worried I've ordered the new sprocket nut and washer for £8 from Yamaha. Only a 5 min job to change them over. Just wanted to know what torque to go to. I think I'll go double the original.

Tempted to go for a 14t front sprocket too.

cool, tell me if its any good on 14t

i read on there that the fazers geared pretty low,but it could have been bs

From the vids I've watched I can't see anyone topping out the Fazers to the limiter in 6th, so not really anything to loose.

In top gear its about 500rpm more for the same speed as the 15t.

Could be fun in first though Wink

The problem iirc is that the shaft has a fine thread and monkey's over tighten the nut stripping the thread.

Common problem to most Yamaha's. seem to remember it happened to Pete's Diversion.

Hi 0l0dom0l0,

Only trying to help, but your comment (below) worries me for your safety and for the goood of your bike.

"If you're worried I've ordered the new sprocket nut and washer for £8 from Yamaha. Only a 5 min job to change them over. Just wanted to know what torque to go to. I think I'll go double the original."

Applying extra torque above the manufacturer's specification is asking for trouble, why not keep it simple and use 'strong' grade thread locking compound in conjuction with the locking tab.

Reference sickpup's comment.

Yeah this was one of the things. Its a general weakness.

The R6's suffered too, from 98 to 05 along with the FZ6 04 to 05.

Problem is also though that the standard 70nm isn't enough to keep the sprocket nut tight in some cases. People have had theirs fall off but most commonly people find its hand tight.

The new nut is meant to stop this, hence why I've bought one but I'm still not 100% sure what torque to do it up to. I remember reading that it was safe up to double the original (I think). Sounds a lot but when you think about it 70nm doesn't take much to undo, and the bikes has 50 odd nm of torque anyway.
