Hi all.
I have noticed the exhaust on my STR are starting to turn sort of a dark purple colour at the engine and i was wondering, as the engine is sexy matt black what is the best paint to use to get the same colour on the exhaust? i have heard some stories about the halfords paint peeling off.

Anyone here painted there exhaust and if so what did you use?

Cheers

Halford's paints are cheap but do the job.. You obviously want high temp they do Matt black BBQ paint or "HOT" paint in wickes and B&Q you're going to pay more for the better stuff

I painted my 125 exhaust with the "Hot" stuff that i got from a random hardware store in my local town.. £8 a can

did the job
Thumbs Up

PJ1 and sperex I have found to be excellent at painting exhausts.

Just make sure that the exhaust is free from rust prior to painting it! You know that chromed/stainless exhausts turn allsorts of colours with heat right?

I just use the stuff from halfords that comes in a tin in the spray gun. Works a treat Thumbs Up. I Imagine they're spray cans are the same stuff. Remember to cure it properly otherwise it will peel.

If your exhaust is chrome and is blooming, autosol should get rid of the purple discolouration.

High temp paint won't do it, i'll all burn off. You need VERY high temp paint. The stuff halfords sell is even higher temp in a pot than a rattle can.

Many moons ago I chanced upon a product called Kal-Gard Exhaust Kote.It sprayed or painted onto a cleaned and heated metal surface like exhaust down pipes and was then baked on/cured.I visited the Kal-Gard factory when I was working in Los Angeles a few years after and blagged a few freebies as well as buying some more products to bring home with the duty-free.

It is just a shame that they no longer sell Exhaust-Kote or Gun-Kote anymore. This was the stuff that they used on Freddie Spencer's Superbike at Daytona-which proved that it was race ready.

Basically, if you paint the 'zorst on your bike, once your done, warm up your bike for about 15 minutes. Let it cool, and warm it up again for about a half-hour. The slow warming process helps the paint cure.

If your not doing it on the bike, bake the exhaust in your oven. I cant remember the temperatures or times but ill try to find out for you. Remember that no matter what paint you use it will always peel around the manifold just because it gets TOO hot. You can wrap exhaust tape around it if you want. Personally I just leave it since its behind fairings anyway.

Still, if you can restore the chrome finish, thats the way to go Thumbs Up

This. You want halfords own brand VERY high temperature paint (VHT). It comes in small pots and only in silver or black. This is different stuff from the High temperature paint (HT).

Platikote BBQ paint does a neat job but it will burn off header pipes. That VHT stuff is the only stuff I've had that'll paint a header pipe and not burn off.

EDIT: Nothing will reliably stick to hot chrome. Not much sticks well to stainless or titanium. You should really only be painting a mild steel exhaust.

Haha, the words of a man who has clearly owned a rat bike Laughing
Put it on in layers nice and thin letting each dry properly. If you just slap a load on it'll drip everywhere and not be fully dry underneath when you start the bike it. Then it'll crack, peel and within 10 miles your exhaust will look unpainted again.

Actually, there is one thing that WILL stick to a chrome header pipe and make it non-shiny. A tesco carrier bag. Harl*y forums are full of posts about how to remove plastic bag residues from their header pipes. Not much use for the OP though.

I used a VHT silver paint on my exhaust. You can also get VHT laqcuer which would make it look shiny. Father used it on an RC exhaust on top of VHT blue paint and it looked good.

Theres a before and after below. The before is shit because it was quite a few weeks before I decided to paint it and the after is just a little bit of the mid pipe because the main was all wrapped up.

It was cooked in my dads oven though, mother would go mental haha! Laughing

Its not that much worse now. Bit of tarnishing right by the head but the majority is alright. Apart from a few scratches and a small petrol spill.

Looks much better than black IMO. I'll get a pic of it currently, later on. And I'll try and find the can, too!

This is a pic of my old 750 Honda after application of the Kal-Gard Header-Kote.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/LatterDays028-1.jpg

The chrome was shot blasted off so as to give the paint a good base, then heated up to what was required on the tin, then cured with various warm-ups once mounted onto the bike.It was good stuff when you could get it.

Yeah, if its your xr then its like 4 bolts. 2 for the manifold, one exhaust bracket and one for the hanger at the back I would imagine.

You will miss bits and end up spraying the frame Laughing
