Well after about 2 hours faffing with solder and a blowtorch I have managed to get the solder to fuse completely around my leaking plate as discussed before in this thread:

((I did managed to acquire a new NOS petrol tank in teh correct colour - guess what - the mount broke in half!)
Not having petrol to hand, what other liquids could I use to test that there are no leaks and has a similar viscosity to petrol?
