Put money into the bank. Withdraw money when dog needs treatment.
Pet insurance is a crock of shit and they will find ANY excuse not to pay out.

Not for a dog, but we have just had to make a claim on our esure pet insurance policy for our 5 year old cat and we are extremely happy with how the claim was handled. He broke his ankle quite badly and needed it pinned and wired back together. Treatment came to 3.5k.

They were very prompt and professional and were extremely helpful on the phone with any questions we had. They were also happy to deal with the vet direct, meaning we did not have to pay the vet up front and then claim the money back (of course your vet has to be ok with this too). When we were shopping around for cover there were some insurers that would not pay the vet direct. Paying up front is something we could not have easily afforded to do in this instance.

Annual premium at last renewal was about £90 with a £175 excess and up to £7.5k cover per condition. Will be interesting to see what the premium is next year.

Based on my recent experience I can only say positive things really. Makes a nice change where insurance is concerned.

No I don’t work for them, just a genuinely happy customer (so far).

That for vet bills sure, but am I right in thinking that in asking for "fully comp" dog insurance you are looking for 3rd party liability cover too, ie should your dog bite someone you would be covered for any claim against you?

If that's the case it might be worth asking your home insurance provider if they would provide 3rd party in those circumstances and to give you a quote if they say yes.

The insurance goes up when they get older.

My dog bless him is 14.5 years old and costs about £44 a month to insure.

He is really old, quite blind/deaf. Bit sad really, he has gone soo old in the last year. This time last year it was still a 5 mile walk every day. Not anymore.

Apart from a small op when he was a pup, he has been fine since.

The problem I find with the pet insurance is the excess. For most of the things my dog has needed, i.e a course of antibiotics it was under the excess.

I'm with Animal Friends insurance and they've been great. My Whippet X managed to get a 10x4 cm abscess along the underneath of her spine. She had to go to a specialist vets and undergo £4K worth of treatment which took me right to my claim limit (which reminds me I need to up that!). AF sorted out the claim within the month, the only exclusions being the rather inflated specialist exam fee (AF only paid the standard £40) and an expensive blanket.

Maybe we have just got really lucky with our dog but she has cost us F'all in vet fees, we have had her about 12 years and I doubt we have spent £1000 at the vets in that time.
