YBR 125

My current pride and joy...Decided to keep it long term, simply based on reliabilty, ease of repair, and cheapness to run! Even post test it'll make an ideal backup/commuter.

Not sure if it warrants a thread - However i'll post up the details of any modifications made, and the effect they had in here, and hope it becomes of use to anyone who's got the same bike and are considering altering it in any way, shape or form.

£1600, including an oxford rainex cover, a years fresh tax on it, all the paperwork, warranty, and a set of crash bars fitted. It'd been well looked after, kept in a shed with his old mans pre facelift YBR 125, and whenever left outdoors always with the cover on it. 3089 miles on the clock, and not even a year old. Bargain IMO!

Within a few days had clocked up 400 miles on it, and reached the 3500 mile service mark. Serviced using yamaha oil, and proper yamaha air filter, sump washer etc. Also gave the chain a good going over with some Wurth chain cleaner & chain lube. No noticeable difference, however - I'm sure in the long run it'll make a more reliable healthy engine. And the less horses it looses over the years the better, cause it's not got many!!

Decided to fit up some kind of charger for my satnav/phone, as im on the road quite a bit! Satnavs smaller in my bag than a map, and lighter. Opted for this from ebay from a seller called mr_buybits. Fits nicely up next to the battery, and the socket velcro's onto the bars.

After a week or so i noticed that it was cornering quite badly - put it down to bad riding, but after it proceeded to get worse and worse & had the comments "zeng what? you wanna cut those off the wheel" and "That tyre's square!" from two seperate people, Tyres needed checking out.

Turned out i had mismatched tyres & the rear was squared. Fitted pilot sportys, following advice from a few websites & an uprated headlight bulb (Ring Xenon H4 fitment) to make the headlight useful

Handling dramaticly improved. Loads more grip, especially in the wet/cold. Bike gave me a bit of confidence! Much smoother when leaning, and the transition from leaning left to leaning right was a lot easier. Seemed to grip a lot better after the tyres lost the knobbly bits. No longer slid all over the place if you let the clutch out a little hard on the downshift, and no longer snaked up the road whenever i used the back brake in the rain!

Then the screen i'd ordered up after my first few long distance rides appeared...

Made a massive difference when holding speeds of 40+ for a long time. Definately good for the comfort & IMO makes the bike look a bit nicer! Opted for the Puig plus from a german ebay seller after getting messed around by M&P. Apparently it'll take them from the 20th of feburary till the 4th of april to get a screen to me that i was quoted 1-3 working days for delivery. Ze germans managed it in 3 days - something to be said for the famous efficiency

At which point i'd set about adjusting the bike to make it more comfortable for me - so fitted these.

Theyre the "streetfighter" bars, 7/8 diameter. I'd checked out the specs and measured up the closest to what I wanted on their website - made it a lot easier to choose. Slightly lower (i tended to lean forwards quite a bit, this made it more comfy to do as such), but more importantly a little wider and a lot less sweep. The extra width made the mirrors useful for seeing something other than my elbows, and loosing some sweep allowed my arms to stretch out a bit! Bike felt a bit quicker to respond in the corners - and no more aches after an hours test ride!

At the minuite the only things i'd realy like for the bike are a set of heated grips for the long rides, as i've found more than once my little fingers tend to freeze up. Oh and possibly a posh exhaust. However i think that £250 is a joke, so it'll probbably be a case of a "universal" can from ebay, and renting out a pipe bender to make up the downpipe section of the exhaust. Might make a nice little project

Also need to clean said bike up, and get some decent photo's of it as it stands now the wiring round the bars has been tidied up a bit

Looked at the flat bars, but when i got on the bike and put my hands in roughly the same position it diddnt feel right at all. Wanted a slight drop, but not too much!

Sweep on all the other road bars is higher too...i get the feeling if they'd been named ROAD MEDIUM LOW then there'd be no problem

Definately a cringeworthy name.

Although, that bar pad actually spaces out enough that i can clamp my satnav mount to something - so it does have its uses

I like YBR's, I did my CBT on one back in '08 and intended to get one as a first bike, however every time I found one locally and within budget it was sold. Ended up with a scooter out of desperation, but later got a DTR to make up for that mistake

Was double sided taped onto the back of the clocks before i had the screen...Had i not slowed right down it'd probbably have hit me in the face.

The screen?

Ebay. bs-motoparts-uk, its a Puig plus, and including the postage it'll set you back £80.00. Would highly reccomend them. M&P do them, however they feel its acceptable to ignore customer emails, sell you a part saying its going to take three days, and then making you go to the extent of opening a claim with paypal to get a refund, then recive an email saying they expect the part you ordered three weeks ago to be in by the 4th of APRIL!?! Ze germans managed it in three days, and sent me emails when it was packed, when the courier took it, and then the link to track the parcel every step of the way. That'd be the world famous efficiency for you!

Tyres?

Ebay, cork1316, £99.99 and then £9.99 postage. He got em to me in three days and they were as stated, brand new, not a mark on em. I belive they're a bike shop in Leeds? Would reccomend.

Pissing about with the bike again today. Decided that i'd had enough of the yellow headlight, and i wanted to make it match up with the white/blue headlight. Can i find out what bulb it takes for the sidelight? No chance.

Cut a long story short, 501's. Bog standard car sidelight bulbs, press fit. I opted for halfords 501UB (Ultra blue). Comparison to stock bulb?

But for future referance, the main bulb is a standard car fitment H4. Had a look at the price of halfords ultra bright bulbs, £23 a bulb?! yeah right. The ring bulbs are availible from performancebulbs on ebay and are listed up as RING H4 XENON MAX HEADLIGHT BULBS. £13.99 for two, with free postage. I reccomend getting some & you'll find out why when you go out down a realy dark badly potholed back lane without em...ask me how i know

Halfords bulb has lost its colour after a few weeks...wasnt too impressed. However now knowing sizes ordered a "cloudy" white LED bulb from ebay for £1.50 a pair.

Also on order is a 13t sprocket...If i can reach 75mph, at 9500rpm then the bike's hopelessly over geared with its standard 14t. Spend most of my time sub 50mph anyway, so will have to see how dropping one tooth on the front affects it. £5.50 posted off ebay...will post results. Hoping to gain some acceleration to lug my fat arse up hills!

Finally gave up on frozen fingers and bought the heated grips. Opted for the oxfords as they came highly reccomended. Lovely bit of kit especially on the late night hospital runs.

Will however have to take the throttle grip back off, and file down the lip on the throttle tube to slide it on that slight bit further. but other than that, went on fine. I would reccomend investing in a good file rather than a little needle file to smooth the ridges off though! And as a side note, i found after fitting the throttle was very sticky.

Turned out i'd not done anything wrong, however the extra weight of the cable to the grip and such had highlighted a lack of tension on the return throttle cable. Quick fiddle with the adjusters sorted it after i'd spend hours oiling all the cables and taking it to bits repeatedly. D'oh!

Also, i had to fit the controller to the wrong side of the bars, and bend the bracket a little to make it fit. I find it easy enough to operate, & its the only way i could see of making the bracket work for the application.

Just gotta fit the bar ends. Got some stainless ones on order after being advised that heavier was better for stability & to avoid the pretty alloy/carbon ones. Will see if it makes any difference whatsoever, although i'm doubtful!

That said, marys talking about a CBT so i may have to get a big bike sooner than expected, or at least a 2nd half decent 125. Dont want a repeat of the C90 reaction

Bar ends sorted...Needed to mod the insert to fit the renthals. Made the bike smoother into the corners and reduced the bar vibrations...feel a lot more confident on the bike now. Oberion stainless steel ones, as they were the only "heavy" bar ends i could find on ebay.

Clamped one of the fitting bolts up in the drill, screwed the insert on, dug a rock out of the garden and ground it down with that. Files diddnt work anywhere near aswell as the rock.

Halfords bulbs, not worth the money. Blue tints faded out, turned a pale shade of green

Fitted white LED bulb, no paint shit on the lens, makes natural white light...no danger of it fading out.

Downgeared the bike too, fitted a 13t on the front. Will go into detail when i get the pics from a mate of the mods required to the plate which holds the sprocket on. But summary is that the cog for a 2008 bike will fit, but you need new bolts and a slight tweak to the plate. Also, you wont get smaller than a 13 on without severe fucking around with spacers, washers, shims and bolts with nearly non existant heads, bolt to chain clearance is VERY tight.

Noticeably quicker to pull away in 3rd gear, powers much more useable through 4th aswell. 1st & 2nd...not so noticeable, and 5th i cant comment as havnt had a chance to properly get it up to speed and see whats what.

Picked up a 2012 YBR in Mistal Gray on thursday.. Currently running her in, looks the business! Was thinking of getting some twin headlights and renthals to give it a bit of a meaner look! Was wondering if you could take a pic of your bike without the screen so I can see how it'll look with renthals?

Thought of getting yourself a new exhaust kit? If so have a look at the GPR, has a sweet sound to it, but veryyy costly

Will try and get you one however im not going to be pulling it apart for the wiring tidy up till i get the replacement clutch switch. Might be a week or so!

Thought about exhausts, however i've put down a deposit on an SV650...the other halfs having the YBR, so she'll be the one sorting out a new exhaust when it rots out. Motad will do just the downpipe for £45 in stainless so you could just use a universal can and make up a custom system. Might have a crack at it myself in a few months - just got to deal with the expenses of tests & such

Twin headlights arent a good idea. On the YBR all the dash wiring/switch wiring is installed in the back of the headlight unit. Im also told they're a lot dimmer too - worth thinking about, but i do like the dominator lights with the flyscreen.

Whatever you do though, get a set of pilot sportys on it ASAP - the stock tyres will try and kill you fairly early on!

Hi Iain, quick question. Did you have any issues with the screen not fitting? I bought that exact screen from BS-Motors as you recommended, and it just didn't fit. Couldn't get the Headlight back inplace with it on as the lip on the underside of the screen got in the way, I had to cut a section of that lip out

You've gotta bolt the screen on loosely, refit the headlight and then flip the screen up into place and tighten the bolts. Think when it all goes back together that lip helps hold the screen up
