Best post on BCF in many months. Some of the pics are fantastic, is there a link to a hi-res album so I can nick a couple for wallpaper?

Off road bike is a high priority for 2013.

Great post guys. Looks like you had fun.

What did you do for insurance/breakdown cover? Both of mine only cover mainland europe. Sad

Once you get through the Moroccan border there's a booth immediately afterwards where you can buy insurance. What it covers you for I have no idea.

We thought it was best to have it in case the police used it as an excuse to use us like a mobile cash machine, as it turned out, the police are not interested in hassling European bikers at all.

You buy third party road insurance at the border but its not worth the paper its printed on some dont even bother with it, there is no breakdown cover apart from calling peter from bikers home out to come and get you which i think is 1 euro per km from his place in Ouarzazate (we stayed a night there well worth a visit good food and conversation.)

Trips like theses outside Europe you have to be able to work on your own bike and carry the required basic tools/spares to get by with.

For those of you who want to do a similar trip, then get this book

https://stanfords.s3.amazonaws.com/coverimage/176025_MorocOver_jkt.jpg

https://www.morocco-overland.com/

It has routes for road and trails, information on their difficulty and a road book style layout for the routes.

Everything you need to know is in there.

Other good websiites/forums are

https://www.advrider.com/forums/

and

What are the sort of spares do you take?
How far do you go, chains, tyre levers, clutches, bearings?!

I think preparation was the key. Getting all the extras and fitting them to the bike well in advance. Obviously all the bearings are checked before you go. New C&S, oil and filter and stuff like that.

I took a spare split link, brake and clutch lever, front and back inner tube, puncture kit, WD40, JB Weld, cable ties, nuts and bolts, plus a spare clutch cable which was needed as mine snapped. Bearings can be bought out there, plus I saw a Yamaha dealer in Marrakech.

Tatters took more spares but we were lucky that we didn't really need to use much.

Preparation is the key.

You'll be happy to know the XT coped with the rough stuff really well. Have you got standard suspension on yours? If you have really consider the Hyperpro springs before you set off, they made riding the XT off road really easy. It was a bit bouncy but that made it really easy and comfortable to ride.

Tatters took a few short videos:

First one is a very rocky section on MH5 - you can't quite see how bad it is from the vid. I was struggling with an about to snap clutch cable. It was getting some serious abuse as I was geared for the road, the cable snapped about 5 minutes later.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ5bUszxVOg&feature=g-user-u

Second one, over the worst of the rocks on that trail, just picking our way along

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lOJhT6Y25A&feature=g-user-u

A typical scene if you stop in or near a village, not in this video but one time we had to do a U-turn in a tight area and we got properly mobbed

This all looks so cool!
What happens when you break break down, have a puncture or something?
Do you bring tools with you?
Spare inner tube?
I'm curious.

Yeah, that's exactly it, take what you can within reason. My clutch cable snapped halfway up a mountain on a very rocky trail - MH5 for those with Chris Scott's book, the most difficult one in the book - so I was thankful I'd taken a spare.

I'd like to see an RAC van get up there.

If you really get stuck Peter from Bikershome in Ouarzazate operates a breakdown recovery service.

I knew the cable had snapped due to the resistance going at the lever.

I was worried before when the cable was on the verge of snapping as I couldn't disengage the clutch and had miles of rocky trail to ride Laughing

That would not have been fun.
