Hi BCF

Hopefully going to be looking over a 2005 YBR today. (Few hours)
It will be my first Bike since getting my CBT pass on Saturday.
I'll be getting another lesson before I feel comfortable enough to ride solo, but what should I be looking for in a Used YBR?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-YBR125-/230786812483?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item35bbf74a43

I don't think I'll be able to test ride it as I don't even have any of my own gear just yet. Anything I should be looking out for or obvious tell tale signs to avoid the bike?
I'll be taking my Dad whose fairly mechanically minded, but extra ammo always helps Thumbs Up

Thanks

looks kosher, low milage, good nick, recent model, low price....

Id suggest doing a https://www.hpicheck.com/?gclid=CO2pzf_ooLACFWwntAod9lgAXA - Hpi check to make sure its all good!

All the best.

Looks can be deceiving.
Visually, the YBR looked in good nick to a rookie like me Embarassed
My Dad however gave it a proper going over,
Overall:

# No Side Stand
# Front brake pads low
# Exhaust had alot of rust
# Front forks tainted
# No Service

So it needed alot of maintenance work to bring up to scratch, the guy had basically just rode it and didn't maintain or wash it down.
Being in Cornwall with Sea air, it doesn't take long to get work on metal work.

With the guy not budging from £1000 (£1150 ask price) and taking all the uplift required. I walked away and will continue looking Thumbs Up

If its the original exhaust its gonna be rusty after 7 years and the pads would be simple enough to change but if you weren't happy then good for you for walking away.
The bloke has to be expected to be knocked down on price, especially as there's no service history.
I'd rather have a dull looking but well maintained bike than a shiny dud. Wink

If it was purely cosmetic, I would of had it.
I'm only after it to learn and get me through my test before selling on again.
However it had signs it had been neglected and driven hard, the front brake wasn't low, it NEEDED replacing.
All this explained to me after by my Dad Rolling Eyes
Better luck next time I guess, I'll be patient Thumbs Up

A lot of bikes don't have a service history because a lot of bikers will service their own bikes rather than pay for a stamp in their little service book.

I think that I've heard on here a few times that you can get more of a feel about the service history of the bike by actually talking to the owner than in that little book.

^ What that guy said. Garage would charge me maybe £50 for parts & labour to change oil, oil filter & air filter. I did it myself for £15.

And you would do a more careful job because it's your bike!

I always service my own bikes and I know they are done to at least the same standard as a dealers (if not better).

I used to keep reciepts for oil, filters etc. but don't bother now. I have a table bike lift and a garage full of tools, its pretty obvious I do my own maintenance and if it doesn't convice a buyer, well they have lost out.

You were right to walk away, if for no other reason than if it were a bargain then it would already have sold.

I also suggest that any seller who describes a bike as "she" still has his (figurative) knob well up "her" exhaust and won't want to pull it out.

All that said, it doesn't look like you have an awful lot of choice round there. Thinking

That's the problem, I've really got my sights set on a YBR to get me through my tests.
But there are none around.
Only other option is up my budget a buy one from a dealer at £1999, but I can't justify the price knowing it will be gone within 6 months. This being as I intend to pass my A2 before the Changes next year.
Really don't want to have to get a CG, they just don't look right to
Me lol.

( The YBR linked is still for sale, after being advertised for 2 weeks. I dug up last weeks local classifieds are there it was. Something isn't right )

Without seeing it, it's a bit difficult to be sure, but maybe this is a good bike to get cheap? Pads are a cheap and easy fix. A side stand I'm sure is available off ebay. If it looks a dog just cause he hasn't cleaned it then haggle him down.

Just get anything, you'll only be on it until you pass your tests. A CG will be fine. If you fixate on YBRs then you may have to wait quite a while for a decent bargain to come up.

They didn't come with side stands. Can buy them of the internet though and it's easy to fit.

The exhaust is made out of cheese and is very very difficult to prevent from going rusty after 5-7 years but fortunately a whole new one is only £95

A year's MOT, SORNed (so the owner wants rid of it), go and buy it before someone else does.

Ah yes, the good old West Briton classifieds.
You may find something in there.
I saw a ybr in there the other week; 2010 plate for £1600.
But it's quite costly to advertise in there, considering the small amount of text you're aloud etc, so the chances of finding a dirt cheap 125 aren't that likely.

Ebay and Gumtree will be your best bet. Just keep looking.

If you don't find anything, I would recommend going to Cornwall Bike Restoration in Helston and have a look at their Lexmotos.
The Lexmoto Street 125 would be, well err, right up your street. Laughing
I bought one from there, £999 OTR.
Loved every minute on that bike.
People will say 'Oh no, not Chinese bikes. They'll fall apart in front of your eyes!'
Paah, what a load of old cobblers.
The Street is an honest and reliable commuter. IMO, the best Chinese bike on the market today.
Basically a carbon copy of the Suzuki EN. Same engine and frame.

Just my 2 Penny Coin.

Thanks for your help watchman

I did see that YBR, but it was Sold before ye olde West Briton was even published Evil or Very Mad
Those lexmoto's looks really good, but for £1000 new ... they just seem to good to be true Rolling Eyes
Dont see many second has Street's either, only new ones which I find strange.
I'll wait for tomorrow to see if I have any replies from Gumtree, Then Classifieds ... Then It will be CG125 time Sick or any other route.

Yes, £999 for a brand new bike may seem too good to be true, but trust me, it's a brilliant bike.
Loved the handling. I could just chuck it about at will.
And the tires were very inspiring, even if they are just supposedly 'crappy' chinese tires (Duro).

I miss that 'flickabilty' of it.

The CB feels so much more different and strange.
I don't have a lot of confidence in it at the moment, but I think I just have to get used to it.

You might have seen a used street for sale, but I sold mine to my mate across the road, so didn't have the need to put it on ebay or the like.

I think the main reason you don't see many for sale second hand, is because most people who buy them are of an older age who want something cheap and good on fuel.
Plus they don't need an MOT for 3 years, so another reason why people might be reluctant to sell them.

Sigh ... I think its the Lexmoto route Rolling Eyes
Nothing in my local
Nothing turned up on Ebay or gum tree
I figure most Bikes are selling for £1000 anyway, I might as well get a new Lexmoto Street for that. Hopefully sell it on for a small loss afterwards.
Good Idea?

Still abit cautious, I trust your opinion Watchman Razz
It's just strange the lack of reviews or even youtube videos.
Either way, lack of bike is starting to get to me Twisted Evil lol

have a look at www.biketrader.co.uk. also pistonheads.co.uk they have cracking deals sometimes... have you considered honda cbf 125? one of the guys i know brought one for £700 08 reg, don't rush, go for something like yamaha, honda or hyosung if you looking at £1000, better than lexmoto for sure Smile i hate chinese imports... the quality is really poor Rolling Eyes

Cash in hand, go and buy a bike the moment it comes up. It's not rocket surgery.

A new Street might be a peach or a lemon, but either way, you'll take a bath when you sell it on.
