I'm sure there's a subtle advertising message going on in this picture, but I just can't put my finger on it...

As someone who owns both Arai and Shoei, do you have a preference between them?

I resprayed my shoei again - took it down to the base coat of original white, primed it, then had about 6 light coats of matte satin black. Finished off with red bull decals.

Some would say that it's a budget Scott Redding replica from god knows how many seasons ago when he was sponsored by Red Bull!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/q72/s720x720/969908_10151803563425712_985363305_n.jpg

First attempt started crazing due to the fact that I applied lacquer on the base coat.

Simple answer for me... Arai! Why? Because I have more of a rounded, asian-shaped head. Shoei's I've felt have either been too narrow or round for my preference, so I always used to either get pressure points around the temples, or be forced to go up one size to make it more comfortable around the temples, but have it loose around the crown.

Unfortunately, for that very reason, I can't wear HJC's brilliantly discounted R-PHA or the new AGV Corsa/Pista ! The best off-the-peg lids for me have always been Arai... irrespective of model - chaser, quantum, RX, they all fit nicely!

It's all in the prep Matt.

All in, I spent an hour here and there every night over the course of 3 nights.

Arrow I had to pry off all the vents and take off everything that I could take off.

Arrow I removed the liner and masked off the rubbers - eyeport gasket and bottom seal on the lid

Arrow Shoved a towel inside the lid and masked off the visor/eye port with a cereal box and masking tape.

Arrow Tape off any vent holes or plug them up to protect the EPS foam.

Arrow Wet sanded with 320 grit to remove the previous coat - to the point where I could see the original coat of white. Went to 600 grit and finished off with 800 grit.

Arrow Applied acrylic plastikote plastic primer - this jobby is a clear primer. Says it's safe for polycarbonate and composites, so I went with it. Most definitely did NOT want to use any other primer i had in my collection, namely acid etch primer Shocked .

Arrow 2 light coats followed 1/2 hour apart followed by 2 heavy coats
with an hour gap. Leave 2 days for primer to level - sanded with 800 grit.

Arrow 5 light coats on lid + vents which i removed. Since it was satin and applied lightly, I didn't get any paint runs. Paint levelled off after 2 days. DO NOT APPLY LACQUER!

Job done. If you want to apply decals, make sure you have a hair drier ready! makes it a LOT easier!

whatever is available at B&Q. I generally find that plastikote mixes pretty well and sprays nicely. The nibs aren't too bad either.

So plastikote satin black - £6.99 and plastikote plastic primer - £6.99 at B&Q.
