God we get ripped off on tyres in this country, tomorrow I'll be getting a set of Michelin Power Pure's fitted, £260 fitted and he comes to my house.

Just been trawling some forums in the US, they seem to be getting the same tyres for the same price in dollars, so £160 for a SET of tyres...

I got my Pirelli Diablo rear for £70 odd quid. Can't imagine the front costs more than the rear, so £150 for a set sounds about right Confused

I suspect this may be the reason your prices are so high.

I just fitted a Conti touring 120/70x17 £69.00.

But I'm getting decent tyres fitted, all the bike shops I went around couldn't beat £232 for the tyres alone, then fitting ontop.

No offence meant to you guys, but those tyres are either old or not top of the range.

I don't see how people can compare prices to the US.

We are completely different, vat, higher labour rates, higher
property rents and rates, most places in the US are part of
a chain that has massive buying power when compared to our
independent or small chains.

There's too many differences to make a comparison.

I'm sure we could have cheaper tyres if you wish to give up all
the services and safety nets we have in this country.

Let's give up the NHS and benefits system, in favour of saving
50 quid on a tyre.

There's more to the US vs UK price difference than they pay xxx
and we yyy, we must be getting ripped off.

Yup, welcome to the world of performance tyres.

£264 fitted for my Racetech K3's. Its the price you pay for the sticky stuff.

If tyres come as such a shock to you. Wait till your first major service. Twisted Evil

It's true, it's different parallels.

They get paid less, ergo they spend less on things.

We get paid more, we spend more on things. It's all relative, and if you switched countries you'd be no better off monetarily really.

Fortunately for me my ego and lack of riding ability don't require me to have the latest greatest tyres on my bike. Quite happy with mismatched cheaper touring tyres.

Not quite, the Americans get paid about the same - but their taxation system is vastly different. Mean income is very similar.

That's what I mean, the cash they do eventually receive is different, not to mention all the money that goes on tax, aswel as paying for health care at what? Thousands a year?

If I wasn't paying for the porkers, smokers, drunks and work dodgers, I wouldn't really give a stuff how much my tyres cost.

My last tyre came from (IIRC) Poland and turned up within 48 hours, tracked all the way. Fitting cost me "Ah, one of the boys did it, no charge."

Welcome to the common market.

I don't get what all the fuss is about?

I bought a brand new set of BT023's, fitted and balanced to loose wheels for £200.

Not going to complain at that tbh.

Not when its £10 ish to get a tyre changed on a loose wheel if you buy part worns etc.

I worked it out and for the amount of miles I do, it was just better and easier to spend £200 on a decent set of tyres that would last me for a fair while without requiring attention.

Although, my rear is looking rather worn now after about 4k and 3 trackdays. When I did my calculations I was expecting to get about 10k from the rear lol.

If youre wanting race rubber, get scrubs.

You can get tyres that have done 1 heat cycle, 8/10/12 short circuit laps and 75% or more life in them for under £100 the pair.

To be fair, good tyres do make a difference if you corner fast enough to approach the limits of the tyres' grip. I guess that's stating the obvious though Laughing

Can't beat race scrubs at £60 a set though if you want sticky tyres.

as others have said, use race scrubs. I used to always get the pirelli diablo's that were on offer at M&P for £140 but they stopped doing them so i started using race tyres.

As already mentioned, you can get them for £80 on ebay for a set that have only been used for 1 heat cycle and still have nearly all the tread depth left in the centres, which is ideal if your planning on using them for road riding as they tend to wear out evenly all over by the time there done so none of the horrible squared off tyre feeling towards the end, there also much more grippy than normal road tyres, bit of a no brainer really.

Also because there soft and flexible there a doddle to fit yourself too.

I couldnt imagine paying £140 for a set of tyres now, let alone £260 Shocked

That actually wasn't intended as a pop...just a serious point about whether or not you need sticky tyres Thumbs Up

If the OP gets to the limits of shit tyres, it's worth him buying good ones. Of course the slowest rider in the world can reach the limits of his tyres if a lorry pulls out in front of him so I guess there's value in good rubber even if you don't bomb around.

I completely agree with you, but if i remember correctly sickpup was involved in a bit of a 'debate' over why sticky tyres were a waste of money for 99% of people. Was a while ago mind

I wasn't aware of that. He's probably right in terms of how hard 99% of people corner but there is still the braking advantage.

That said, a lot of bikers probably don't really maximise their braking either.

To be fair I'd be absofuckinglutely amazed if the OP could out corner me on the road on a set of race scrubs or just about any sticky tyre. Thumbs Up

I was at my tyre dealers just last week discussing this very point. Neither of us could understand why people buy the latest greatest sticky tyres for commuting or why people think they need the latest greatest sticky tyre for driving on the road.

I don't claim to need sticky sports rubber, merely that having used touring tyres and sports tyres, I much prefer the softer tyres in terms of how they feel to ride on, and the confidence they give. The fact I do low mileage makes it feasable too. Obviously if you're doing 20k a year or something you don't want to be changing tyres every 5k!
