Figured i'd post as it might prove useful to those working on project bikes with various rusty parts.
I'd read a few things online about using electrolysis for parts cleaning & more importantly tank cleaning. Decided to give it a shot, however on a much smaller scale to doing my tank.

Cleaning the nuts i'd used to de-rust my tank before.
This is what i came up with.

A curry tub full of saltwater, a PSU from a computer, An old GS500 dipstick to use as an anode (cause it's steel) and then the bolts twisted round an earthing wire (making them the cathode.)
The saltwater went a funny colour straight away. Probbably dye from the wool.

Fizzed up a bit...Then the rust started to form around the old dipstick.

And the nuts when removed & rinsed in water.

And after,

And the saltwater,

I think this stands a pretty good chance of working on the tank, however unsure if the PSU will be man enough for it. Shall see. I belive the nuts could have been brought back further had i left it running, but it is pretty stinky in the house. Hence doing it under the cooker hood. I think for doing the tank i'll do a bit of wood with three 10mm holes in it, and slot three M10 bolts through em, 100mm ones or something, so that theres a bigger anode for it to react with. Think that'll make it run faster. Will update as and when.
The potential for making a slightly larger parts cleaner also springs to mind. Washing up bowl with a bar of steel down the side of it to be connected to the positive. ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

I used electrolysis to de-rust my HELL of a rusty tank. Worked well. ____________________ CBT Passed: 25.05.11, Theory Passed: 12.07.11, MOD1 Passed: 01.04.12, MOD2 Passed: 20.07.12

Damn, must let me know how to do this. Have a few light rusty parts on that Vara that need cleaning before spraying pretty colours. |

Okay.
After draining tank due to fuel filters going a tad orange over the past week, this would explain quite a lot;
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/FF07195A-AC08-4F89-BC92-DEA92C739E3A-2376-000002E4EF2DCD1F.jpg
Filled with salt water, two buckets of. Spare stuff kept for topping up.
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/3ABE471B-7FE7-458F-99A3-FE73AD027E3D-2376-000002E4F4A55F57.jpg
Top of a pepsi bottle, with a steel bolt in the lid. Wire wrapped round the bolt. Few breather holes melted in it too...
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/4554EE29-232F-43F4-A1BC-402255ADFD18-2376-000002E4FBE61BDF.jpg
Fitted to the top of the tank;
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/7BB8C5CD-FBC7-4949-AC45-DB22DC56436D-2376-000002E5006E8568.jpg
And powered up...on the computer power supply. which i then knocked water into and fried. d'oh.
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/1C0D231A-C624-4177-87C3-17292CB82372-2376-000002E51F271513.jpg
Replaced computer PSU with automatic battery charger, hooked up to car battery. Theory is that the charger sees the battery as not fully charged & keeps it going full whack, rather than detecting the tank as being fully charged & turning off the current. Provided more current, and more bubbles. Win.

The tray under the overflow pipe after an hour. Keep in mind this is just what bubbled off the top.

After two hours i blocked the overflow pipe to try and nuke all the rust round the filler.

Seems to be working well...
Paddy, i reckon if i put the bolt in a washing up bowl of saltwater, then hooked the negative up to your parts & dunked em in it'd work just fine. Although shit HAS to be run outside cause it stinks like mad, and produces lots of toxic chlorine gas. ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

Finished.
Pulled it all out, drained tank of saltwater & put in bath for final rinse. Cue the other half going absolutely spastic, as she was just about to get in the bath...
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/5D8030BF-DE64-4C14-9156-1AA8ED1C8745-2568-000003006714BE2C.jpg
The lumps the last hour and a half had removed.
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/A030CBCA-2D4A-4FF0-9D5F-6E11FBAD02C4-2568-000003007102C2F0.jpg
And the final shot of the tank.
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/8C917C55-063A-4C05-95F1-1C512672EDD3-2568-000003006C25B3BA.jpg
Whilst it's not perfect, from start to finish, the whole process has taken 5hrs & cost me a pot of tesco's cheapest table salt. I'm impressed to say the least, and have edited together three pictures. The shot from the beginning, the shot from halfway through, then the shot after final rinse. Something of an improvement.

That black mark had been in the tank from the day i got the bike, perhaps someone dropped something in it in the past. I dont know tbh.
Now carb cleaning, and hopefully a few months of trouble free running ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

OK, now get cocky, and instead of having to re-do it every few weeks..... copper plate it!
Swap anode & cathode around, fill with copper sulphate solution (chrystals can be bought of e-bay)

Hmmmmm... alternatively as you are a super-cheap-skate......
make your own, remains of an old battery acid pack, maybe drain the acid out of a couple of sulphated up batteries, use that as electrolyte.....
Then use old copper house wire, or copper heating pipe as your annode, let electrolysis ionise the copper into the sulphuric acid then deposit it on the metal you have just de-rusted to provide a copper lining......
IAN!
I said COPPER, not COPPA... you cant dissolve police men in Sulphitic acid and attach them to electrodes
no matter HOW tempting the idea may be! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I did wonder about doing something like this, although it'll have to wait for a few weeks/such time as i've got the YBR on the go.
I'll have to play with a few small scale test pieces and see where we go - however a VERY interesting idea. As for attaching electrodes to policemen, and then dissolving them in acid...well. If only!
Edit; Took out for a test, ran okay, got a little spluttery, then got VERY spluttery, stopped - took a look to find it'd rewarded me for all my hard efforts by pissing fuel from an unknown point on the tank tap. Pondering rebuilding around a new frame/swingarm as im certain there's something...you know...bad about it. Previous owner said it kept trying to kill him, the guy that had it before him it chucked up the road, it chucked me off within a few weeks of ownership...
