the solution does NOT clean at all, it merely provides a good conductor for the electrolysis process to occur, however soda crystals are far safer.

Using salt water is not advisable as it produces chlorine gas on your anode which IS TOXIC.

Also, a 12v supply with ammeter is useful as you can set a specific current to control your process, either by adding water or soda crystals to your mix to increase or reduce the current and also differing the ration between your cathode and anode.

I did a rusty header pipe earlier in the year using a battery charger and some soda crystals, worked a treat.

Laughing Damn, must let me know how to do this. Have a few light rusty parts on that Vara that need cleaning before spraying pretty colours.

OK, now get cocky, and instead of having to re-do it every few weeks..... copper plate it!

Swap anode & cathode around, fill with copper sulphate solution (chrystals can be bought of e-bay)

Hmmmmm... alternatively as you are a super-cheap-skate......

make your own, remains of an old battery acid pack, maybe drain the acid out of a couple of sulphated up batteries, use that as electrolyte..... Wink

Then use old copper house wire, or copper heating pipe as your annode, let electrolysis ionise the copper into the sulphuric acid then deposit it on the metal you have just de-rusted to provide a copper lining......

IAN!

I said COPPER, not COPPA... you cant dissolve police men in Sulphitic acid and attach them to electrodes Shocked

no matter HOW tempting the idea may be!

Just have a look for electrolysis rust removal, it's all there.

I find Robby's guide to be a bit more helpful.
Shame the picture links have expired. Sad

There's a fairly comprehensive guide here, complete with circuit diagrams:

Pfft, all you did was as an exfoliant for her! No pleasing some people.
