PostPosted: 21:13 - 19 Oct 2012    Post subject: My ZX6R J1 race bike project Reply with quote

Starting racing next year and converting my ZX6R J1 2000 to a full race bike. Thought I would start this thread to look back at in the future and possibly give me some motivation if I ever feel like I can't be bothered.

Where was I going to work on the bike?

I have a detached 'garage' at the end of my drive which was converted from a standard garage to a small office by my Dad when he ran his own business years ago. About 10 years ago he stopped using it as he went to work for a local company and from about 4 years ago I was allowed to use it as my own space.

I converted the front room to a place for my mates and I to chill out with my decks, speakers, xbox etc etc in but the back room was used for storage and turned into a place to dump general shit in the end. When I started to clear it out it looked like this:

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20120929_135150.jpg

I then found some motivation and cleared it out completely, it took a whole weekend and a lot of coffee/energy drinks to move everything and sort through what could be chucked and what needed to be saved to be moved to the loft in the house.

In the end it looked like this (I have now sorted the mould that had formed on the walls):

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20120930_180511.jpg
https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20120930_175641.jpg

So I had my 'workshop' ready now so now to move on to the bike...

This is how the bike looked when I first bought it in June with 10,000 miles on it.

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20120530_190543.jpg
https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20120530_190624-1.jpg

Then I crashed it at Mallory Park and this is how it looked after.

(If you are interested in how it happened the video is here > https://youtu.be/bfE3Konv4yc?hd=1)

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20120713_151459-1.jpg
https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20120713_151506-1.jpg
https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20120713_151513-1.jpg

So then I fitted some race fairings to it when I repaired everything, in total it cost me around £300 for all the parts.

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20120727_074855.jpg
https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20120728_170011.jpg

So I've been riding it on the road and track like that for a few months now but I just passed my driving test on Tuesday and have bought myself a van ready for next year. Now I don't rely on the bike to commute I have taken it off the road and begun work on it.

How it looked when I first got it into my 'workshop':

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20121017_204239.jpg
https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20121017_204320.jpg
https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20121017_212310.jpg

After I watched the BSB highlights on Wednesday I decided to start taking a few bits off and got a bit carried away Laughing managed to get this done in 45 minutes:

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20121017_220945.jpg
https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20121017_221022.jpg

I carried on stripping it down last night for little bit and have got this far now:

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20121018_221206.jpg
https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20121018_221155.jpg

Reckon I need a new air filter?! Laughing I had to hover out the air box there was so much crap in there, probably because one of the grills fell out the air intakes a while ago and I couldn't be bothered to take the fairings off to put it back it in.

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20121018_204236.jpg

So tomorrow the plan is to carry on and try remove as much of the back end as I can as I'm getting the forks and shock rebuilt professionally. Just typed all of this out so can't be bothered to add a list of what I'm planning to do now, I'll add that over the weekend along with more updates as I carry on working on it.

Doth mine eyes deceive me or is thine subframe alignment not true?

I looked at that picture and my first thought was 'oh shit'. Laughing

Just had a look though and think it's just the angle it was taken at. Know any ways of checking properly?

Edit: Guess I could measure from a equal point of the main frame back to the rear corners of the sub frame?

Run a bit of string from the head stock nut over the tank, down the subframe and to the middle of the rear wheel?

OR

Assuming your floor is level and the bike is on the stand straight i'd try handing down a bit of string from each side of the sub frame and measure the distance from it to the wheel.

Surely measuring from a point such as the end of the handle bars to the edge of the sub frame would achieve the same thing?

Bars are usually the first thing to take a whack in a crash and they can rotate about the fork.

Off topic, but are you the guy who stopped on the A34 to help out a fellow ninja rider (me) who's bike had cut out in an epic traffic queue?

Yup that was me!

Did the rest of your journey go smoothly?

Just did some measurements and it is definitely just the angle the picture was taken at.

Huzzah! Thanks again, although you only had to look at my bike for it to kick back into life! The rest of the journey went fine, apart from my alarm fob getting flooded and setting my alarm off. it did help to clear the traffic out the way, but i had to stop and shut it up, which is when I let you go past me.

I do recall your J1 being one of the nicer ones I had seen, can't resist a white bike.

Laughing Wish it was that easy with my bikes! Ah okay, good to hear you made it.

It did look really nice when I first got it, hopefully it is going to look even better at the end of this project!

Right, quick update on today's progress...

Spent most of the morning shuffling a few bits around in the room to move the table from the front into the back so I have a flat work surface but then cracked on with the bike.

Drained the oil & coolant completely, the coolant took a while to flush fully to get rid of all the anti freeze as it needed to be completely clean to comply with ACU rules (only water).

Also removed the subframe:

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20121020_155741.jpg

Couldn't resist running the bike without the zaust for a little bit (I had to warm it up to drop the oil Wink ) and it sounded loverrrlllyyy! Very Happy

Cheers mate Thumbs Up when are you back again?

Update on new progress...

Got the swinging arm off, managed to snap a socket ratchet in the process of this! It was on its way out anyway so I was expecting it soon anyway.

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20121023_152403.jpg

Rear shock will be going off for rebuilding this weekend hopefully, looking nice and dirty here:

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20121023_152432.jpg

Drained the brakes and removed the old lines:

https://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t468/RedDevil92/20121023_151455.jpg

The brakes are filthy, going to take a decent clean to get those up to standard!

Exhaust & radiator are now off as well, think I've pretty much got everything off I need to take off now. Waiting to get paid on Thursday to start ordering parts in and working on what I've taken off, also need to wait for the rear shock to be rebuilt and put back on so I can get the forks off and get them sorted.

21st December. First thing I will be doing is getting in the house about 11am and going straight into the garage to get to work. I have pretty much got January off work so plenty of time to get it all sorted.

Will order all my brake seal kits ect closer to the time and you'll have to email me about how the rear shock gets on mate.

We are due to sail from the port we are in saturday so won't have this internet capability Sad

Don't you mean genuinely? Would you like a hand down from that high horse of yours? Wink

On the suspension front, definitely agree that he seems like the man for the job! Think he will be able help me out if I ever have any issues with it as well, just need to get better at giving feedback about how the bike is reacting.

Embarassed Embarassed Nope, I meant in general of course! Embarassed And FYI, my high horse just ran off!

And the rear shock, interested to see if it will make a difference to be honest! It would be good to know. Although, it probably will.
