|
|
In an attempt to cure the hard starting issue on my bike I though I would pull the spark plug for a clean.
Got it lose with one of those T wrench spark plug removers and screwed out by hand now my problem is getting it back in I have screwed in by hand to what I can but the wrench is just next to useless keeps slipping I don't want to damage anything.
This click is how far I have screwed it in by hand is there any other way I can get it back in? Or do I need to walk two miles for a deep socket?
It's a 16mm hex fitting. |

I can see what cimbian was going on about now,you really shouldn't be working on bikes if you can't change a plug FFS. |

Something aint right if you can't thread it in almost all the way down without a socket/spanner. I'd say if it's going tight enough for a plug wrench to slip off n its that far out the block you've fooked the thread on the plug or the head. ____________________ Current Bike- Suzuki DRZ400 SM K6

screw it in finger tight then a quarter of a ratchet turn is a pretty good rule. If it's screwing in then going loose the head may be fooked, in which case you'll be dropping the engine out to get the head re-tapped.
Happened to me recently. No bullshit, plopped the plug in, wound it finger tight, whacked the socket and extenders on, tiny bit of ratchet movement and clunk! The metal bit of the plug had snapped in the thread, mate got the rest of the plug out with a pushrod, and he dropped the engine out to go to a garage as we thought it would be a head off job.
Garage re-tapped it, all is well now, but NGK and halfords have yet to respond to my complaint and request for re-imbursement. Safe to say I now use Denso's, better plugs anyway |

Ripped from my YBR servicing guide;
Remove the spark plug cap, it just pulls off.
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/IMG_0660.jpg
And remove the spark plug - I belive it's some sort of odd size, however the long 17mm socket in the halfords 3/8" set undoes it nicely.
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/IMG_0661.jpg
Below is a plug that'd done 3000 miles next to a new un!
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/IMG_0663.jpg
Check the plug gap with the feeler gauges - it should be 0.6-0.7mm or 0.024-0.028"
Measure as shown below
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/IMG_0656.jpg
If too loose, give it a tap on the wall and measure again.
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/IMG_0658.jpg
Too tight, use the pliars to pull the tip up a smidge. BE GENTLE. I've never had to do this unless i've tapped the wall too hard..
Do the plug up finger tight
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/IMG_0664.jpg
and give it a little "nip" up with the socket. NO MORE THAN 1/4 TURN!! normally, 1/8th is all it needs! shown below:
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/IMG_0665.jpg
https://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o574/_Iain_/IMG_0666.jpg
Push the spark plug cap back on:

If the plug wont screw all the way in by hand, then either the thread in the cylinder head is fucked, or its the wrong plug you are using.
"it looks the same as it did when it came out"
Unfourtunately doesn't mean shit.
You clearly lack experience, and as such you wouldnt know what its SUPPOSED to look like. As such if the previous owner fucked it up, and you've finished the fuckery of the thread when you pulled it out, you wouldnt be any the wiser as to what it looked like when it came out of the factory, would you? No.
In trying to force the plug in on a semi fucked thread whilst having a temper tantrum you've probbably completely and utterly crossthreaded the head. If its the right plug, the heads okay etc. The plug WILL thread in with your fingers till its tight up against the copper washer that came with the plug. You then give it the 1/4 turn "Nip" as illustrated in the pictures.
Yours scincerely,
The "mong" that couldnt link you to the relevant information because he was out & on BCF via his phone. ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

I am failing to understand how the tool was able to get the plug out but not able to tighten it back up. And it's not as if the plug was down a deep hard-to-access hole what couldn't even be seen down. FFS.
