New toy - GSXR1100L

Well winter boredom finally got the better of me, and after a year of trash talk in IRC I finally took the plunge and bought this -

(Apologies for my fat thumb in shot, new phone and no i didn't bother checking the pics before uploading them).

1990 GSXR1100L, completely bog standard other than period shitty mods like the blue screen and braided hoses.

Good bits - standard bike, no stupid 4-1 nosiy exhaust or wanker air filters. All old MOT's included with sale and one owner since 1993. Starts and runs ok.

Mint standard headers with both stock cans and a set of cheap and nasty ART alloy straight through's.

Bad bits - Wheels are crusty and in need of refurb / decent tyres. One lower fork adjuster is seized (annoying and expensive, but better than the three I had to sort on my 750). Stanctions a bit worn but no oil leaks past seals so can stay worn for now, will probably get them professionally refurbished over winter. Braided hoses are shit and will be swopped to a two line arrangement with black covered HEL lines as per my 750. There are two cracks in the bodywork, one on the left hand side where the mirror mounts, and one on the rear of the seat panel on the same side. Neither is a big deal, if the rest of the bike proves ok I'll probably get the guy who painted my X5 to restore those pieces.

Basic plan is to service and and sort the important issues then ride the thing over summer and do the "vanity" bits over winter. I need to sell the 750 first though to make room to work on it!

Well, after a month of letting it rot away under a bike cover in the garden while sorting out sale of the 750 and being busy IRL, I finally did some stripping down today.

This was strange and rather disconcerting. A few tugs on the hydraulic clutch and BOOM the hose blew under the top banjo, pissing fluid everywhere. A frenzied clean up with acres of wet cloths followed. I then cracked the bottom union off and drained the system to stop it happening again while i sort a new hose.

Seat unit off - what do we have here? The remains of a ghetto alarm system, that's what . Luckily the remains only touched the OEM wiring at two points, once at the fusebox and once at the rear light loom, possibly as some form of indicator repeater when arming the godawful contraption.

So onto the bad stuff. The bike had an advisory at last MOT for a "slightly blowing exhaust". While it didn't sound too bad I've now found out why the previous owner had sourced a replacement system. The collector where the silencers attach is, to be blunt, fucked.

My intention was to leave the exhaust swop untill winter but having seen this I just can't. However this is what I have to deal with at the engine end.

Not looking forward to trying to undo those at all.

Feeling a bit meh about the whole thing to be honest. While I want to get it on the road ASAP I'm not going to cut corners. Spent a few quid on Robinsons's website, mainly on bits and bobs, probably go and buy some shit on Wemoto later so at least I have all the bits to hand.

Well today I took the oil cooler and exhaust silencers off in lieu of attempting to remove the headers.

Then I deceided to assess how deep the shit was regarding the header flange bolts.

Answer - very deep

I got one of the outer bolts undone. However most of the rest have marinated in rust so long that the hex just falls to bits the moment you apply any torque. Well at least they'll never snap .

So plan is to drill the heads off the remaining bolts, get the headers off and then helicoil the fucking lot in situ. It'll be a right cvnt of a job, make no mistake. Have stocked up on drill bits as a session dismantaling the belly pan this morning showed my current drill bits to be as much use as Smiler in a job interview.
