Had the same exhaust issues with a 750H model I owned many years ago! Ended up cutting the header pipes off to remove the engine as I didn't fancy pistol drilling the old bolts in situ at the time! ( less room on the old oil burners!)
Not many of these bikes ever made 30k miles let alone 60k so well done to whoever owned it for keeping it rubber side down. Iconic bike of the era that! ____________________ Current bikes...cbr929, KDX200's, Rd125lc mk2, RGV250's |

Small update, loads done but not much in way of pics.
Front end removed, fork oil changed, legal tyre obtained from local backstreet breakers (Michelin PR3 - £25.00 - result!). Head bearings were a bit dubious so i deceided to change them rather than have to strip the whole front end down in future when the bike is on the road. Needless to say I never want to have to do them again. Utter pig of a job - depsite what the Haynes book of lies might think there is virtually no accesible edge to drift the races out .
So, we move to the rotted exhaust held on by even rustier bolts. The good news is that the outer cylinders gave up their bolts via mild violence. The bad news is the inner ones were not coming out, ever, even after the heads were removed. Two of the inner studs are quite accesible by drill and were quickly taken out to 8.3mm (Helicoil size). The other two are snug enough to the frame rails that getting a drill square onto them is difficult as the chuck hits the frame rail or oil cooler bracket before you get really deep enough. After much head scratching and discussing the possibility of dropping the engine we tried a last gasp effort of slackening the removable part of the frame's lower cradle which gave us enough movement to do one. The other one we eventually managed to do by tweaking the oil cooler bracket and starting very small (3mm) then working up. Despite it's inaccessability the final hole and helicoil is actually pretty square .

Trial fitted the new system but couldn't complete the job as I need to buy some studs. Still it's a fucking relief not to have to drop the engine
Still seems so much work to do though, am just hoping I can get it legal and get at least some use out of it this summer. ____________________ 18:54:48 Rob Fzs: jews don't give away stuff for free

Productive week. Got some 40mm M8 studs via Yambits and using the brass manifold nuts previously purchased was able to mount the exhaust to the bike.

Using my bank Holiday weekend to best effect made some serious inroads on reassembling the bloody thing. Forks back in, front wheel remounted then calipers refitted with fresh pads. Followed by major head scratching re the brake lines. I have dumped the splitter and gone for a two line setup, however no matter how I fiddled one side seemed too short. I ended up rotating the master cylinder forward slightly to get more movement, which meant it gave the effect of a smaller master cylinder which made bleeding a right bastard.
The upside is that all this was done with the front end off the floor so the forks were at full travel, the situation eased once the weight was on the forks and I could rotate the master cylinder into a better position for topping up.

So once the front end was complete (ish) I thought sod it and fitted the spare set of standard silencers (which don't have terminal tinworm of the innards) and refitted the tank with new mounting rubbers. Usual infernally difficult task to getting all the hoses back on the tank and getting the rubbers to stay put, but it's all back together and I had it running earlier, sounds much less "chuffy" without the leaky exhaust.

Few things didn't go to plan. The rivet link I bought, despite being the same manufacturer and size as the chain, won't fit. I'm not riding the bike even round the block with the split link, so I took the plunge and ordered a new chain. I did however fit the new sprocket nut and tab washer and confirmed that the hydraulic clutch did indeed work.
Next jobs are to sort the wiring fault on the clocks that is stopping the oil light working, fit my spare set of headlights and do an oil and filter change. It might even get MOT'd this millennia.... ____________________ 18:54:48 Rob Fzs: jews don't give away stuff for free

It'll be the dogs. Drop the box out and put up a photo of the gears. If they are the type I can fix I'll do them for you straight away so you don't miss too much summer. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Paddy was right...i really would get slaughtered on here if i bought one & raped it for its's engine\front end.
I too fail to see the appeal. GSXR's of that vintage were fecking ugly.
However, dat engine... ____________________ Please be aware that the above post may be full of complete nonsense.

Yeah, but that was a £500 "I WANT BIG BIKE NOW!" purchase a few days after passing test. It looked a lot worse after i crashed it & bodged it up with lots of matt black paint.
Still, if you ever wreck it bad & it still runs then dibs on the motor! |
