Yup... I've bought another duke ! Very Happy

A 1969/71 (long story, but its between those year as the frame number is gone....1970 uk imported a few to export to the usa with out vins, this is one.Dvla have reg'd it as a 71 an "invalid" until i get the correct details from the ducati owners club sent to them to correct the v5) ducati 160 monza jnr.

Spotted this little bike on ebay and managed to pick it up for only £550 from swindon. The owner stripped it down and then decided to buy another instead...as you do !
So i picked it up in the mini ! lol !

Did polish and clean 2 small side panels, but no pics....

Decided after hearing a rattle from the gear box selector i would take it apart...glad i did !!!!
https://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p138/lilldic_mossy/Ducati%20monza%20jnr%20160/IMG_2249_zps9acdd437.jpg

After...
https://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p138/lilldic_mossy/Ducati%20monza%20jnr%20160/IMG_2250_zps3da60533.jpg

front
https://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p138/lilldic_mossy/Ducati%20monza%20jnr%20160/IMG_2251_zps32d8bd5d.jpg

The rattle was a little tang of the rusty selector plate. It still selects it at the top so im hoping the little tang was only to locate in a bottom groove. If it doesnt work, i'll have to look at somehow getting a new one.
It'll be all filled up with grease when its ready to go back on the engine...

Tmrw night i'll split the engine !

(help... side panel gaskets... what can i use for them ?

Cheers all ! Thumbs Up Very Happy
Ordered some paint removing disks today as recommended by sickpup. (pup.. bought the ones for the drill instead of the angle grinder as i love the drill a bit more then that blasted thing)

Reading the old users manual makes me lol.... those Italians love putting their feelings in to their descriptions of how to start the bike.
I'll have to do snip-bits every now and again for you all. Very Happy

One thing that does puzzle me is that how do i go about finding if i can use unleaded in here, or will it be additives as well.... some people say if the valves have been changed to run it... but the last time this was last on the road was 1981, so i think thats unlikely.

Right time to print off some exploded views of the engine and take it apart to see if its all there...

yeah the valve might have to be changed as would have run on 4 star back in the day. i know you can get addiatives but i would rather have new valves in.

I may have to go for the additives as funding spares is hit and miss at the moment.
Tonight I've been mainly just poking around the engine.
Ain't split the engine as I've peaked inside and it all seems to be okay. All the parts have a new light film of oil on them.

Took the oil pump apart and cleaned it out.
Tried bolting some odds and sods on the engine to get the bags of parts down but found several duplicated parts !
Seems like the last owners decided to start collecting bits and mixed them all in ! Argh !
I've ordered one of those ducati single workshop manuals as I need to fully understand what shims, bits etc go exactly where. But more importantly how to set the timing.

Looked at the overhead unit as something was niggling me about it.
Turns out in one of the bags contain all the gears to get it to work. Sigh.

It the material of the valve seat that needs to be looked at, old 4 star engines had the seats cut directly into the head which will wear prematurely with modern fuel.

I would also make the effort now to convert it, while its all apart get some copper alloy (bronze) seats cut in.

You'll be glad you made the effort later.

In all the boxes i have so many duplicate bits where the last owner had bought stuff and mixed them up.... no wonder he gave up !

Look at the wear on the bevel cams compared to the new one !
Very strange ????
I replaced all the bevel gears and shims just to make sure...
