https://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p138/lilldic_mossy/Ducati%20monza%20jnr%20160/IMG_2367_zps643e1ca3.jpg

I should have taken a pic of the frame in the bath being cleaned up with engine degreaser lol !

So... this week i'll be mainly sandblasting the frame and some bits, painting and hopefully getting the engine sorted....
Loads to do !

Im gutted when i stripped apart the clocks the gears were totally rusted.Which could be the reason why such a low mileage....Also the speedo cable end was chewed up from the gears seizing probably.

I think those clocks are at a dead lost with out spending a fair bob getting them fixed, best bet it to find a similar one/style on ebay.

Main thing first is to get it running.Once ive managed to do that, then in time start to do bits to it.

(still need to solder the translogic wiring on the 916 ! lol !)

Piston rings turned up ! Well after a letter from customs sayin i now owe them a further £19 for vat and handling fees.... so the £50 for the rings and £25 p+p (shocking i know) needed an extra £19 on top like i needed it ffs.

Woodruff keys turned up, fitted.... gear selection box greased..

Problem solved with the clutch issue, theres an adjuster on the plates side you can take out a bit which brings the clutch arm away from the case...job done !

Then moved in to the warmest place in the house to dry over night.

Right, the 916 dash has been done so i can stop dicking around with that and move things along with the monza.

Needed to make some space in the kitchen so i decided to move back outside and get it looking like a bike again.

First up was the forks which was a pig to attach to the stem and lower clamp...would not go in at all. Then when i did, i noticed i had them in wrong so i had to take them back out again...ffs. No pics as i was tamping.

Note.... if the last owner didnt put all the ball bearings in the box for you, and its a bank holiday, an old mountain bike at the bottom of the garden can be used for parts Wink Thumbs Up Same sized ball bearings in the stem.

pics !

https://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p138/lilldic_mossy/Ducati%20monza%20jnr%20160/IMG_2411_zpsf3106999.jpg

The rear shocks will be coming back off to be replaced, so dont worry; The same goes for the wheels.... they need a full strip down. Front fork lowers will be sprayed silver.

42 years old...... last on its wheels in 1981 (32 years off the road). Finally it sits on its own wheels.
Still loads and LOADS to do.....need to buy circlips,a stainless steel nuts and bolts pack, chain, wiring, tank, oil in forks, rear shocks, exhaust needs sorting, all the controls,Cafe style seat, respoke the wheels...... yeah, just a bit to do. lol !

(seat pan has risen up in the pics, just noticed that lol ! )

Sorry... I'm having a post-traumatic-flash-back spotting that points cover plate!

Random images of pressure washer lance..... and the speedo... wobbling in blurry vision, trying to bump start.... feeler guages with what look like spot weld marks..... an orange battery charger.... and lots of smoke.....

Phew. they're clearing....

Aquantence of mine, Chris Veneri, used to bring a lot of them in in the mid 90's, and punted most out at the classic shows and jumbles, most noteably the Stafford Classic... anything resonate with the bikes providence?

Actually... working my way through some old negs.... think should be the subject of another thread..... (Jup: here you go Two Italians? Any Ideas?)

Watching with interest. Are the wheels really in need of completely respoking, they look ok in the photo?

They look old and tired.... thats does bring up a good question...

When are spokes fucked and when are they "salvageable" ?
Comments please as it could save me a bit of cash getting them done Smile

Nice one. I attempted to resurrect one of those in the late nineties, but my project never progressed further than a bit of work on the engine and frame before I gave it all to a mate.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2008/12/13/bikepics-1508282-full.jpg

I've probably still got some pics of completed bikes and a bunch of manuals and documents. I'll see what I can dig out. It's been a few years. Smile

Hey look what I found in a dusty shopping bag in the garage:

https://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x386/Ultio2003/IMG_1258.jpg

It's in kilometres, not miles, but may tide you over if you can't find anything else. It's approx. 6cm diameter.

I feel that you may be able to offer it a better home than I can.

What's your intentions towards this loverly little italian lady?
As long as the wheels weren't falling to bits, he'd usually leave them alone. In his words; [italian shrug]"Well, if they satisfy old Stowei (MOT Man).. that's good enough... only going to sit in the cellar, be wheeled around a bit & maybe ridden round the concourse arena in first a few times a year...."
But, when he was scrambling competatively; he'd do a post season strip and overhaul and every year the wheels would be stripped and re-spoked. "Last thing you want when you're doing 50 per over a field with half a dozen bikes round you is a wheel colapsing... just change'em as course.... peace of mind"

MOT man cant fail what he cant see... and lots of old bikes pass with rusty rims, they rot from the inside.

Old 70's classics, can be made to look half decent, and ridden gently on half a dozen occassions a year to a meet or whatever, and never stretching thier legs.... may be 'OK' and not fail.

Little CG, scrubbed up on the cheap as a daily rider, though, used frequently and ridden hard... wheels start to wobble, as constant use sees spokes flex and the rust under the nipples get worn away, spokes go loose, then cyclic loadings start to vary enormousely as spokes take and release tension as the wheel goes round, new exposed, thin steel in the rim rusts and wears, and eventually spokes start breaking or pull through, and the wheel can colapse, even without ragging the arse off the thing.

If it was a keeper, I would be inclined to re-build, and inclined to replace the rims while I was at it, for peace of mind. Hapeths of tar and all that.

But, watching penies, and knowing it wasn't going to see much, and certainly not hard use.... I might skimp and clean spokes and check tension... but only after I;d got the tyres off, lifted rim-tape and put a rotary wire into the rim well and cleaned it up to see how much metal was left around the nipples.

Judgement call, really, and yours alone to make.

I think people do actually. I also think that technically Korn owns the copyright on anything that is written here, so taking entire threads for another site might actually be infringing on Korn's copyright. I'm no expert in the laws and rules governing this, but even if it is perfectly legal and there are no rules against it (which, I think there may be in the BikeChatForums terms and conditions) then it is only polite to ask before taking something like that.
