My dearly beloved.

Now sold. She was poorly. I did love her very much! Still do.

There needs to be some modern 400's on the market. Like 70hp, sub 150kg sort of shit. That would make me moist.

None of this dog slow, million-mpg commuter shite like the new Honda 500's.

Before I went down the grey import route with my ZXR, I did consider a Bandit 400.
Just a question to the Bandit 400 owners, I've read so many mixed reviews... What are they really like to own?

in what respect? ine starts first time every time (nomrally), other than the odd hickup here and there (just had srt the carbs again) they are the same as any other bike with odd problems here and there.

they tend to ride fairy well, have a good spirit when you get them on the boil through the back roads. but most people dont like to make bikes rev which the b4s need. honestly with e v-vlave i have its fine arpund town (can easily be riden below 6k) and goes pretty much as well as a b6 once you got the thing upto the 11k mark

It did always look good from a few paces. But once you got closer and spotted the badly applied crankcase sealant and rusty oil res bottom. It's £1k price soon came into perspective. I bought it anyway because when it worked it pulled like all the startugs and zedstacks put together.

It's scattered far and wide now. All I have left is the bars, swingarm, gears, a shift drum and an incomplete bag of engine bolts.

I loved every minute of ownership.
When she ran, she ran well. Such a blast when you're really giving it some.

I don't believe that there are any common problems with them, it's just that as with any Jap-import from the late 80's/early 90's things can start to go wrong if you don't keep on top of maintenance.

Mine had problems, but not because it's a B4, because of previous owners. The forks ripped up the seals, and one leg was slightly bent. 2nd gear skipped, so you couldn't give it the beans in second gear. But that was there when I bought the bike and just gradually got worse over time. The headlights stopped working but that was just someones dodgy soldering. Indicators needed wiring properly.

I worked on mine a fair amount, but in all fairness I didn't really have to. I just wanted everything to be just right.

Great bikes IMO. Not sure why people dislike them tbh. Worlds apart from the Bandit 600's, in that the B4's are really fun and don't feel sluggish and boring.

Crap.

I won't own another. If you need parts for the carbs, remortgage your house/sell your first born.

Bought off a mate in 2002 with 12k on clock for £1700, aged 17, skipped the 125cc and did my test:up:

As you can see from pics mine was a yank import with single disc and no VV and it was a good little bike with a lovely frame and geometry that I had for 8 years and 25000miles. I even went from Norwich to Wales to brighton to Norwich in a weekend once and it sat on the motorways 2up at 8krpm=80mph all the way.
top speed was about 120mph=12krpm!!! screaming, so I generally never pushed it past a ton, but it got there fairly briskly.
about 54bhp 30torques so you had to give it beans to get it going as about 160kgs but nimble none the less, especially with Bridgestone 090s on

I messed with it a fair bit when I went thorough my "fighter phase" jacking up the back, changing the lights and bars, polishing rims, recovered seat to match custom paint, swapped rusty headers for SSteel etc. great fun.

2 low sides, both of which it faired well on. Although obviously the exhaust suffered on one of them. and I had to bend the bars back in a vice. Gave me excuse to make a stubby can which howled wonderfully at the 13k rpm redline.

The only problems were generally ones I created in my naive late teens early 20's

Neglected chain snapped. But a new sprocket cover and clutch pin fixed.

Sump bolt thread went.

when taking tank off I had a prob with vac hose causing fuel issues which left me and my sweetheart late at night stranded and the bike going to the garage. (she's still with me(sweetheart not bike))

Then in recent years probably due to air horns, neons and double the headlight wattage and all manner of other electrical tat being badly fitted by me over the years (including a sub and amp at one stage!!!! Brick Wall )
The electrical issues began manifesting around 37kmiles.......headlight circuit kept blowing fuses, then one day she started and within 2minutes, smoke was bellowing from under the rear seat and she stopped never to start again for me (CDI Burnt out) I attempted to source a replacement spent £80 and failed.

Decided it was time for her to go. some bloke paid me £350 in 2011 for her as a non runner.
it was a bike that taught me a great deal about motorcycling and engines. But remember, it was an old bike when I bought it. Now its a really old bike! So if you intend on buying one, perhaps attempt to source a permanently garaged low mileage example with a few crates of spares.

wow you lot have a lot of problems outside the normal wear and tear stuff. mine ovalled the bores at 80,000km, partially due to a coolant pipe dicounecting itself.

a second motor fixed that with old one waiting for an overhall and a rebore.

and it would appear i have more spare parts than most people, and have also found that alot of 600 stuff bolts strait on
