Hello,
I passed my CBT yesterday Very Happy and i have been wanting to get a bike for awhile so im so happy i finally can. I passed my CBT on a Yamaha YBR 125 which was great as i am only 5ft 6 so i felt comfortable riding it as i could comfortably keep both feet on the floor when when at traffic lights. However i have been looking to get a Honda CBR as i just think they look alot nicer, and on all the reviews i find, the honda generally comes out on top, but i was wondering is there much height difference? As i would like a bike the similar size as the yamaha as i felt comfortable on that and i know the cbr is thin so hopefully my feet will both be able to be flat on the floor aswell ?

The best thing to do is to go to a dealer and sit on a cbr.. that way you can see how it feels for you! they both have good reputations for reliability so you shouldn't have anything to worry about on that front Thumbs Up

I’ve ridden CBF & CBR125’s, never been on a YBR though but from what I can make out, a YBR should handle very similarly to my CBF. If the 125 will be a short term bike only used for practicing on good days, then I’d say get the CBR. It’ll be a bit more fun for the short time you’ll have it. If you want something for commuting then the CBR would have a tiny bit more performance , but CBF/YBR would be cheaper to run as time goes by. Also naked bikes handle drops better, they don’t have fairings to scuff up.

The CBR125 has a more leaned forward sitting position, but IMO it does feel a bit more stable around corners, I think it has a wider back tyre than the YBR, I’m sure it’s wider than a CBF125s back tyre anyway. Has a tiny bit more oomph, and a 6th gear. But being a 125, you’re better off sitting on the CBR, maybe getting a quick test ride, and making the pick based on comfort. Cons of a CBR over the YBR would be a bit less MPG, potentially more costly after a spill, and the insurance would almost certainly be higher – could be a deal breaker if you’re under 21.

5ft 6 would be fine on a CBR, but you'll not find any major difference between the 2 bikes, few mph more for the CBR maybe.

I'd probably just grab the YBR.

The older CBR's were a bit anomolouse. They looked small, but the erganomics were just 'strange'. Some small people hated them, some big people loved them and in the middle.... well, they either felt right, or just didn't.
Not sure whether the newer ones are quite as marmite; they have filled them out a tad; but its one you just have to try before you buy.
And try and actually ride it, or get some-one to hold it up for you while you sit in propper riding position, to be sure of arms to arse to ankle orientation.

YBR? Its the safe bet. Especially if you have done CBT on it and are happy with one.

CBR is compromised from functionality for that sporty styling. Not as badly as some bikes, but you are paying more for a bike that's less alround helpful.

TEFLOND

I agree with him, CBF isn't really worth it, I'd say the YBR to.

The newer model is a bigger bike all round just a tad smaller then the bigger bro. either way paying all that Money for an extra BHP isn't worth it. Unless you're loaded

I loved my CBR125 and I'm 6ft2.

Although getting back on a CBR125 after riding a GS500F just felt wrong. Too small and cramped.

After riding a Varadero 125, I'd get that. Especially if you're 17 and need to keep it for 2 years. I'd even consider one now if I could afford to have two bikes, for commuting. But thankfully my need to commute is shortly over meaning the XJ600 can stay for weekend fun. Very Happy

It's a really difficult choice - I did my CBT on an old Suzuki as I found the YBR a bit cramped. When I went to get my first bike I tried the CBR's but that felt even more cramped.

So I've ended up with a YBR Custom which I absolutely love. But I had to sit on a lot of bikes before I found it!

I'm a 5'10" lady biker so I needed something I felt comfortable riding on with respect to my feet and leg position, but like a lot of people (and I think women in particular from reading the forums) I wanted to also be able to put my feet flat on the floor.

So now any excuse to get on my bike and build up that experience. Can't stop doing the dog out of the car window face when I'm riding - hope that never wears off Laughing

Click links and scroll down and you'll see the info on both bikes. Info such as MPG, top speed, bhp, seat height, brakes type etc etc.

seat height of cbr125 is 776mm and weighs 115kg.

seat height of ybr125 is 760mm and weighs 113kg.

So it's not noticeably different, you'll hardly feel the difference in weight and 6mm height difference is nothing at all, not even noticeable.

I'd go for the CBR because it looks better, faster, just as reliable, easy and comfortable to ride but, it's only 72mpg where as the ybr is 90mpg (ybr is cheaper on petrol) and you will most likely drop it as it's your first bike and replacing plastics can be expensive so i'd invest in some crash bungs Smile Or... even better go for a Honda CBF125, it's almost a mix of both bikes, slighlty sports but the reliability of a bike similar to a ybr and is in the middle of both bikes performance wise but just as reliable and practical as a YBR. I've had a cbf since december and clocked up 4,300 miles and had no problems what so ever, great bikes and cheap to run (90mpg) and is pretty nippy. Smile

To be honest, even though I voted for the CBR in the poll I would recommend the YBR depending on your budget, I would not recommend the CBF for your height since I'm about the same height and I was only just on tip toes on the CBF, on the NEW CBR I nearly had both feet flat on the ground.

YBR 125:............................................. CBR125R (2011-13)
-Cheaper insurance.............................. -More stable at higher speeds
-Cheaper to buy.................................. -Better weather protection
-Should hold between 60-70mph........... -Higher top speed
-Lower seat height than the CBR............ -Handles 60-70mph better
-Cheaper parts/maintenance...................-Looks better

I rode a YBR for the first time yesterday, had to do 30 miles on it to get it back to the shop. I was aching like mad after, ok I'm 6'2" but I currently ride a Suzuki Marauder which is lower etc then the YBR but I dont ache anything like that after riding it for hours at a time.

So I would just go and sit on as many bikes as you can for as long as you can before making up your own mind.

Oi, freakpeople, OP is a proper height, 5'6".

YBR or CBR will both be fine. Me, now, I'd follow the heart and have the CBR because we're none of us on a rehearsal.

Either would be just fine though. Walk away from bad examples until you find a good one at the right price.

CBR is a mini superbikes style, maybe have a look at the Honda CBF as well as its very similar to the YBR.

YBR has my vote though as it was perfect for me as a first bike after the CBT. The thing could run on a tank of petrol forever.

Go with the CBR, but the newer model. They have big bike looks, don't look like your typical 125 bike, and are great fun to ride!

I had an SR125 before and it was alright but I do prefer the CBR by a long shot.
