A good friend of mine 'inherited' this bike from his brother in law after it developed a fault with the fuel system which was never diagnosed. 3 years has passed since it was last on the road and I offered to take it off his hands to keep myself busy over the 4 months off uni I have over the summer. If it's a runner and it all sounds good I'm going to hopefully fully rebuild it and restore it to it's former glory and have it as my 'hoon' bike, if it doesn't this thread is going to be rather short and it will probably end up getting broken for spares, but we don't want that to happen so I'm going to do my best!

This is no ordinary TL though. It's an R that's been street-fightered with a custom twin under seat exhaust and some other bits. Looks sick if you ask me!

First things first and that was to get it the 3 hours home. All loaded in the van and ready to go:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_1317282.jpg

Unloaded the other end. Can see more what we're dealing with here. Looking a bit sorry for itself too where it's been stood so long:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_181342.jpg

Engine casing looks pretty bad:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_181352.jpg

Chain and sprockets are fucked lol:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_181404.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_181422.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_181446.jpg

Quick clean, because cleaning stuff makes bikes easier to work on Wink...... Not come up to bad actually, most of the corrosion is just on the surface and wipes off which is good. Some of the bolts and fittings are gone though:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_211328.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_211331.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_211347.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_211355.jpg

So the next job was to start stripping stuff off and trying to get the bike running. There was a problem with the choke cable getting stuck and not returning so I firstly decided to tackle that and get to the mechanism to free it all off. Tank off:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_213943.jpg

Bit shitty under here:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_213947.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_213954.jpg

Then I took the airbox off to see what was going on underneath that and was greeted with this mess:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_215301.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_215309.jpg

Bikes certainly seen better days, but if it runs I'm going to strip all this off and probably get it re-coated.

Managed to free the choke off nicely and lubes all the throttle mechanism up as well so that's working nicely! Next job was to get the plugs out and drop some oil down the bores as it hasn't been run in so long. Came out with minimal effort, the rear was easy to get to, the front not to much, but I just undid all the radiator bolts and moved the rads out the way. In the process I noticed it's got no coolant in, which isn't ideal, but I'll get some tomorrow and I was going to replace it anyway, just means the block as been left exposed for a while.

So old plug out:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_220522.jpg

Next way to change the suspected faulty relay. Weather its fucked or not I don't know, but the state of the connector didn't fill me with confidence:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130602_223752.jpg

Cleaned that up and put the new relay on.

The decided to drain the oil and change the oil filter. Oil filter was stuck on like a bitch, I bent my tool trying to get it off but it wasn't budging. Then resorted to the old fashioned way of doing it and hammered a screw driver through which, with some persuasion managed to free it off. Didn't get any photo's as I was covered in oil, but I'll add some tomorrow.

Tomorrows plan is to put the new filter on, fill with oil and coolant and then attach the new tank as the old tank is pretty rusty, so I bought a new one with the hope that it will be better. Then attach everything back together, hope that the battery holds it's charge and turn everything on.

I'll know straight away if it's working as the pump will prime up, but I'll also check to see if it's still throwing the fuel circuit fault code on the dash. If the codes gone, it's hit the started and see if she runs!

That's all for now, but I'll update tomorrow with the new progress. It should be running by the end of tomorrow I hope!

Hope you like so far Smile

I hated it looking at the initial pics, but reading the thread i dont think its too bad. Would be nice after a spruce up. Cant really go wrong for the price you've paid, could probably make that back in just engine if you needed to.

I think this TL is too far gone to make it completely standard again, although you could tidy it up and sell it or even sell it now and you would make a profit

Lol at the first time you open the taps with that bar setup Laughing

Please record it.

A friend of mine put Renthal UltraLows on his TLS with the lowest risers he could fit. It was evil for wheelies.

Looks alright for £250, id just ride it, then flog it on.

If it runs then you've got a serious bargain! I'd just ride it as it is to be honest...it would cost a fortune to get standard again.

How many miles are on the clocks?

So, if you haven't watched the video, do! It's a runner. Has 11k on the clocks for anyone that's interested.

First thing I did this morning was put the new oil filter on and fill the bike with oil. Luckily I had just enough to fill the bike which was good.

Out with the old:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130603_091112.jpg

After checking the batteryI pulled out of it which I left on charge over night, it was showing 6.5V ie fucked, so I took a trip to halfords to buy a new battery and some de-ionised water to act as coolant for now.

The old tank was pretty rusty and has certainly seen better days, I managed to pick up a half decent tank on ebay for £45 posted which you can't complain at. It's got a couple of small dents but nothing that a bit of filler wont sort and a re-spray. So I unpacked this out the box:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130603_094048.jpg

The fuel pump works if you connect it directly to a battery, so I was hopeful that it was working nice. I ordered a new gasket set as these are prone to failure and so using the bolts out of it attached the pump to the new tank. I didn't use the new gasket though as the fuel pump will be coming out again and there wasn't really any point. It did leak but it was nothing to worry about just to see if the bike would run. Pump all hooked back up:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130603_095803.jpg

Then I wanted to flush the coolant out. It was evident when I checked it was low. Where it's gone I have no idea but never mind, so I took of the drain bolt and made it go for a wee wee:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20130603_095753.jpg

After filling it with the de-ionised water I connected up the new battery. The next challenge was trying to turn the bloody thing on, as there are 3 keys with it. 1 for the ignition, one for the tank and one for the seat unit, so it was a bit of a lottery Laughing. Especially with the fact the barrel was seized up Laughing. With some oil down the barrel and a bit of wigging I managed to turn the ignition on.

So turned the ignition on and the thing threw me the same error code as before. Hmmmm problem here me thinks. I'd left the fuel pipe disconnected to see if the pump was actually going to work, so I had a little brain wave and wondered if that was something to do with it. Connected that up which was a pain in the ass and turned the bike on with the kill switch off. Seems that by turning the kill switch off it resets everything and didn't chuck me any error codes so I flicked the kill switch and sure enough the fuel pump starts whurrring away!

Gave it a bit of choke (old fashioned this thing) and cranked it over. Nothing really happened so I turned it off and on a few times to get the pump to keep priming and increase the pressure in the fuel rail. Eventually there was a fart and with a combination of choke and throttle it fired up and started running. Left it to tick over on choke at about 1750 rpm to get a bit of oil pressure and topped up the coolant.

Ran it for a few mins then I took the video above! Runs lovely Smile.

So the plan now is to start stripping it down and replacing all the stuff that's fucked. I'll probably clean up all the metal and might get it zinc'd if it's not silly money.

Will keep the progress updates coming!

Yeah, it's been streetfightered obviously. It needs a few modifications to finish the look off which I will do, like moving the battery box and sorting the wiring out and then it won't look so out of place. I'm not sure on the headlights yet either.

It's not a choke, just a fast Idle!!

Haynes do a manual for the TL, its actually quite helpful. I have a full rear tail unit and hump that would match that tank......

Typical street fighter, exhaust is hideous, as is the purple anodised steering damper, headlights are making me sad just looking at it.

Apart from that, good darts. Thumbs Up

What's your plan for it?

The steering damper is purple 'cause it's an older Hyperpro, purple is kinda their thing, if it was an Öhlins no one would moan about it being gold. Wink
The headlights are butt ugly though, but the exhausts aren't too bad IMO.
