The TL motor is pretty smooth low down and loves to be revved!!

although when I rode a ducati 1098 it was lumpy as hell below 80!!

How easy are power wheelies? Will it power wheelie in 3rd?[/quote]

After a few weeks on Paddy's TL, I found it to run out of the sharp power delivery quickly, so I always felt being in high revs for the gear just felt too much of a strain.

But then, that may be because of my IL4 history and the way I'm used to keeping it fairly high to be right in the power band of the gear.

That said, it was tremendous fun even at low speeds with the thunder underneath me, although Central London filtering was a little tight at times when manoeuvring. I would probably give another a go, and even consider one in the future if I could Thumbs Up

Wouldn't have liked to have tried wheelies on it!!

I could bounce the front end and lift it in 2nd, most times it wanted the clutch though. I've also read a few threads of people having gearbox trouble after doing them for a bit so I tended to lay off after that as I am ham fisted.

I wouldn't think it would power up in 3rd, the Super Duke 990 I used would come up in 2nd under power, but definitely not 3rd. That said, neither did the R1 Laughing

it wont wheelie off the throttle in 3rd and will struggle in 2nd!

but with a little clutch no trouble at all

as for the gearbox problems from wheelies not entirely true..the problem is long wheelies cause the oil to fill the gearbox and away from the oil pump stopping oil circulating

later models had a surge plate in the sump to help prevent this happening

the TLR came with the surge plate

you will

they are designed to be ridden on torque which is low down and will drop off by about 9k

keep the revs between 6 and 9K and they are spot on Smile

Right, well I promised I'd update this, and well here we go.

I went on a bit of a spending spree, and well a bit mad Laughing. My parts collection for the bike now looks like this:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/18968307/pics/somestuff/tlstuff.jpg

I'm trying to remember what I've bought Laughing

I think from memory I have:

Front and rear titanium disc bolts
Titanium Sprocket Nuts
Titanium Chain Adjuster Bolts
Titanium Axle Nut
Talon Rear Sprocket
Billet Top Yoke Nut
Standard Top Yoke
Renthal Front Sprocket
DID Gold X Ring Chain
Swingarm Spools
Front Hayabusa Axle for New forks
Clutch Rebuild Kit
Rear Brake Rebuild Kit
Cush Drive Rubbers
Exhaust Gaskets
Samco Hoses
Brembo 19X18 Master Cylinder
Full Water Pump Seal Kit
Few assorted bolts from Suzuki
Viper Exhaust Cans
Standard Exhaust System
TLR Rear Subframe (had a TLS one with the understeat exhaust)
Full Standard Fairing kit

Currently I've stripped the frame right down again, taken the forks etc out again and all the fittings for blasting and coating (should have got these done before really) and also tapped out the bearings in the swingarm so it can all go off to be powder coated black.

STILL trying to source a rear shock.

Going to build this up fairly standard I expect. Hoping to keep the understeat exhaust and fit an R1 tail to make it look a bit fancy.

I also fancy building it as a track bike so will be saving weight where possible.

That's all for now.

Dom

EDIT:

A big shout out to G and Bendy. G picked the fairings, exhaust and supframe up for me as they were 250 miles from my house. It was still a 2 hour drive for him so a massive thank you for his time Thumbs Up. He's running them down to near me tomorrow I think, and Bendy is going to hold onto the stuff until I get back from uni in a month or so.

So a big thanks to both of them!

The TLR has scissor gears that can be removed also, the gains are a couple of HP, but apparently it can make some engines very noisy.

I think the valve stem seals on this are shot to be honest, looking at the state of them up close. They're perished quite badly. Weather it means they'll leak or not I'm not sure. It didn't smoke blue when I ran and revved it before, so I might be okay - but the only real way to tell is to either open the engine or see how much oil it uses.

Which means I'll probably have to open it eventually yes. I'm tempted to do a refresh with new stem seals and gaskets, plus some JP high compression pistons, with new big ends, and 1mm squish to give me around 13.6:1 compression ratio - so I can still run pump fuel in the bike. Power wise, with a few supporting modifications it should be in the mid 130's with that set up. You can't really get much more without spending £££.

Plus, I'll probably get the clutch centre welded, new clutch springs and plates. But this will have to wait until I get a job, as I just don't have the money atm.

I've gotta be careful I don't go too mad if I ever want to get any of the money back I've spent on this - as the parts I've listed and what I've spent so far would have bought me a 06+ R6 track bike with all the tricks, as realistically that's probably where this will end up in all honesty.

TL stands for ticks loudly, also the scissor gear removal can ruin an unhealthy engine. Unless you are going all out on a big bore its pointless doing it.

this

plus its only a little less rotating mass and its makes starting a little harder you need a good battery and starter

I wouldnt bother to be honest I thought about doing it to mine but after reading of the gains V's the work to remove them etc theres no much point

Ha! So you'd all thought I'd given up hey? Well, after spending all that money there is no way I'm giving up now, and I'm actually quite excited to get this finished.

So what have I done?

Well I've stripped the frame down now to nothing, ready to get it powdercoated black. I've spoken to a guy local to me and I need to ring to confirm but am hoping to drop it off next week. I'm taking the frame, swingarm, side stand and mount and the new top yoke I bought down to be coated.
Here's a new box of stuff off the frame ready to be taken to the blasters and zinc coaters.

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140416_200754.jpg

I rang some people with regards to soda blasting the engine but they wanted £90 and I don't want to pay that. So I'm going to do it myself Smile. So I made myself a soda/sand blaster from my compressor.

The idea is simple, you use a duster gun and a piece of plastic pie. Cut a slit in the pipe 2" from the end and slot the end of the duster gun in, then tape it up and put the other end in your box of sand of baking soda. As the air from the duster gun leaves it creates low pressure behind it, sucking up the baking soda or sand. The picture shows this better:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140416_195840.jpg

Shit load of child play pit sand we had knocking about drying in the sun. I used this because it's so fine:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140416_195845.jpg

Then get yourself a blasting area:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140416_195829.jpg

And stuff to sand blast.

Before:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140414_172227.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140414_180038.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140416_192842.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140416_192850.jpg

Then after:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140416_192914.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140416_192918.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140416_195911.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140416_195922.jpg

So that's worked quite nicely and they are ready for powerdercoating.

I then soda blasted the rear brake master cylinder (sorry don't have a before photo). The soda is softer and takes away the engrained much and grime but leaves the finish so is really good for aluminium.

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140416_200801.jpg

And that's come up nicely. I have a rebuild kit for this which I will use when it all goes back together.

As the weather has been so nice it seemed silly not to use it. So the petrol tank came out, was re rubbed down and a bit of filler in the tiny pin holes that were on the surface. Then another coat of primer:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140414_165819.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140414_165827.jpg

I then fitted the new rear sprocket. I had problems with the titanium nuts having to big a flange and fouling on the sprocket carrier so it took me a while grind them down on the bench griner, but fit nicely now. So all locktighted up and on the nicely cleaned up sprocket carrier:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140412_144527.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140412_144523.jpg

New cush drive rubbers in the rear wheel:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140412_144515.jpg

Fitting the sprocket carrier in was a complete ball ache. The rubbers and carrier are tighter than a 4 year old! It was impossible and took me 3 hours of swearing! But it's in now and with use they will free up. Was just tight nothing major and looks good.

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140414_165847.jpg

Also pulled the throttle bodies out, which is pretty much the last thing (apart from the exhaust) left to clean up now. These are the photos of the state they were in:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140411_203019.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140411_203013.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140411_203003.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140411_202955.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140411_202950.jpg

I've cleaned them up as best I can, but didn't get any photos. I tried my soda blaster on them as well, and it worked pretty well. It got rid of a bit of corrosion in places. I'll get some pictures tomorrow.

There isn't really anything left to clean up now, the shelf of 'stuff to clean' is pretty much empty. Just the exhaust to tidy up and polish and a few odd bits to paint but the bulk of it is done!

Once the frame is done, hopefully my home made blaster will clean the engine up nicely and I can repaint that gold with black side cases.

Then sort a rear shock out.

Then put it all back together!!

Frame is at the powdercoaters. Bolts are at the zinc coaters.

Maxton do a rear shock that looks quite nice.

Looking good!

This thread is cool. Awesome project. More updates needed!

BTW IIRC you shouldn't use actual sand for sandblasting as the silica dust produced in the sandblasting process can cause silicosis. Just something to be aware of in future Thumbs Up

Paint the spocket carrier.

Putting grease on the sprocket carrier makes putting it in easier. Use a mallet.
