I could bounce the front end and lift it in 2nd, most times it wanted the clutch though. I've also read a few threads of people having gearbox trouble after doing them for a bit so I tended to lay off after that as I am ham fisted.

I wouldn't think it would power up in 3rd, the Super Duke 990 I used would come up in 2nd under power, but definitely not 3rd. That said, neither did the R1 Laughing

Meant to be able to get R1's up in 3rd. I've been told if you clutch it at around 60 it can take you way over 100 pretty easily Laughing

Lol, 3rd gear wheelies.

If I can clutch up a 1999 r6 in 3rd, then you should be able to do it easily on a 750+

Either that or you're just shit.

Alternatively, get a Ducati. my 1198S powers up in 3rd.

WHY YOU NO UPDATE

I've actually done quite a bit to this, I've just not had the time or the motivation to write it all up.

I'll update over the weekend.

what size compressor were you using? and could i do it with a 1.25hp one if i kept it running all the time, also is that 'Duster Gun' just an airline blow gun? looks really simple and works awesome!

I think it's only a 1.5hp 25l compressor. It's nothing big at all. It has to be running all the time and you have to give it time in between blasts to get the pressure up. It's not ideal but it does work. The duster gun is literally just a normal off the shelf duster gun. Works a treat.

So updates eh.

The frame was stripped and send to be powdercoated along with the swingarm, side stand, stand mount, standard top yoke and the brake torque arm.

Box of bits to go off:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140417_130238.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140417_130450.jpg

I then carried on with the engine. I didn't get many photos but I basically masked all the holes off and used my home made blasting gun to soda blast it off. Then used the same gun set up but with the end in thinners to clean what oil and crap I could off.

I'll just let the photos do the talking:

Priming:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140430_204035.jpg

I'd decided to take off all the covers to paint them and do the job properly. After removing the water pump housing I was greeted with this:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140502_164313-1.jpg

Not good. But with a clean up all would be well.

The cam covers being primed and painted:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140502_232247.jpg

Then test fitted:

Water pump housing as it came off:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140505_183700.jpg

After being sand blasted:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140505_192607.jpg

Primed and painted gloss black:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140505_205153.jpg

Gen cover primed:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140505_211710.jpg

And painted:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140505_225057.jpg

The finish looks a bit lumpy. But it's just the light and I can tell you it's mint in real life.

Clutch cover off (starting to look good now) etc:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140506_175748.jpg

I also replaced the mechanical water pump seal on that but didn't get any photos.

Gen cover fitted with a new gasket:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140506_194702.jpg

And the clutch cover side done:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140526_144724.jpg

I polished the clutch cover plastic up.

Checked the valve clearances and they were very tight. Some were as small as 0.05mm. So I took all the cams out and measured the shims, then bought new ones and replaced. In some order:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140615_190444.jpg

Also painted this as well.

Picked up the frame swingarm and stuff from the powder coaters. New satin black frame:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140607_160559.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140607_160615.jpg

Looks mint!

Put the new zinc fixings on:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140615_181550.jpg

Also then did the head bearings. So knocked the old bearing races out:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140607_165535.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140607_165540.jpg

In the process of removing the race from the yoke I knackered my nice paint so I started again and sanded the paint back to allow me to repaint it:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140615_124333.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140615_130106.jpg

Also started cleaning the loom:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140615_124956.jpg

Fitted the mounts back to the engine:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140615_181609.jpg

Then went to fit the engine but the guy has lost 2 spacers for the rear engine mount so couldn't Sad

Anyway that's how this has come along over the last few weeks. I've missed loads but it's looking good. Need to connect the loom back to the engine, sort the spacers for the frame and then mount the engine back in the frame.

Should be laughing from there really!

I also cannot stress how long all that has taken me. My attention to detail has been so particular! I reckon what you see there is not to shy of 100 hours work.

It's difficult to work on at the moment as well. I finished uni and the plan was to complete this while looking for a job but I got a job starting a week after I finished uni so I'm travelling home at weekends, trying to see the girlfriend and everything else and spend time on this.

It will get done though, I'd like it on the road in time to see some of the nice weather!

When I put the paint on, I thought what the fuck is this! It was meant to be a 'flat gold' and came out 100 times more in your face than the can suggested.

Now I've built it all up and put some of the zinc parts on, plus painted the cases and put the blue hoses on I think it actually looks alright Smile

It does look cool, the Subaru wheel gold, compliments the STI blue of the hoses nicely.

Looks awesome Cool

With the paint going on was it just a rattle can job (May have missed where you said what paint you used)

Did you use a lacquer also? I've seen a few painted engines where the paint has just stripped and I imagine they started life as yours looks now.

Also with spraying the Yoke, looks like a really good job, was that primer and paint or lacquer as well.

I'm trying to perfect my rattle can painting as mine came out a little flat!

The engine paint is VHT (brand) engine enamel spray can. It's gone on really well actually and I was pleasantly surprised. Even in the bits I didn't clean (like the cases) as I was taking them off for separate painting the paint stuck like mad. Once the cases were off for painting I just cleaned and gave them a light sand before priming and then painting.

I did lacquer the engine to hopefully try and seal it. I lacquered the silver tops and clutch cover also as that wasn't gloss paint but left the black bit's un lacquered. We'll see how they last. In an ideal world I'd have got them powdercoated with the yoke but they're easy enough to get off the bike if the paint does start coming off.

The yoke looks alright it was just sanded and then paint straight on as I didn't have any primer, it's a real art trying to get a good finish on gloss paint without any peel or over spray in it. I basically just worked the overspray to an area where you won't see, so you get a good finish on the bits where you see but underneath it's a bit patchy in places.

First time round I lacquered it as well. I won't bother this time and I'll just hope the paint sticks. Lacquering over gloss is tricky and it worked with the time I put in last time, but the suface isn't good enough to give it another go this time. Really what it want's is blasting off like the other bits and starting a fresh from bare metal.

And thanks for the compliments on the engine colour, I was unsure at first lie I said but now I've started putting it all together it looks much better than I thought it would Smile

Updates you want, updates you get.

Engine was ready to go back in the frame. So put it back in the frame and fitted the thermostat. The hoses required a bit of alteration but nothing major. Also installed the catch jar for the crank case breather. Although looking on-line it appears one from a later model is better.

Just a few photos with the swingarm roughly in place:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140622_194411.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140622_194423.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140622_194436.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140622_194446.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140622_194503.jpg

Fitted the shiney polished rear exhaust section before actually fitting the swingarm:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140629_172519.jpg

Chain protector before cleaning:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140629_142122.jpg

Also repainted the yoke AGAIN!!!! I put it down on some bubble wrap last time and the paint wasn't dry Rolling Eyes So sanded it back pretty good and sprayer on it again, then lacquered this time, come up a treat:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140706_123537.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140706_123554.jpg

Also fitted the new tapered head race bearings. What a fucking ball ache this was!! I don't think the bearing is coming off again.....

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140706_144537.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140706_144600.jpg

Then had this lovely large box arrive:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140704_190303.jpg

which enabled me to do this:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140706_163657.jpg

Then fit the forks:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140706_192556.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140706_192613.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140706_192627.jpg

And wiring loom:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140706_192621.jpg

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140706_192645.jpg

Bare in mind I'm not sorted with a rear shock yet so what's there is being held in by a screwdriver at the bottom. It's only a short term solution. I should have a shock coming in the next couple of weeks.

I also repainted the starter motor after a bit of a palava trying to get it all back together again:

https://i1183.photobucket.com/albums/x474/0l0dom0l0/20140706_192705.jpg

That's the current state of the bike. Getting there now Very Happy.

I'm deciding what to do about streetfighter, or standard. I'm really torn between the two currently. I hopefully will be getting an r1 rear seat unit sorted, which I'd like to try with the underseat exhaust for looks.

I'll make a decision in the next few days. It just seems a shame to make all of this effort to then cover the bike in fairings so you don't see any of it, but then seems a shame to ruin what would be a lovely example anyway.

Pleased with how things are looking though!!

I'm deciding what to do about streetfighter, or standard. I'm really torn between the two currently. I hopefully will be getting an r1 rear seat unit sorted, which I'd like to try with the underseat exhaust for looks.

Do not fucking ruin it please.

Thanks

The only way this bike can end is standard IMO!

Why not go the TL S route so the fresh engine is on show

Oh no, no R1 tail unit. Sick

A mint standard bike like this looks amazing in my opinion.

A mint 'custom' 'streetfighter' is something you see all the time, and irrelevant of the stunning condition, and the work gone into it, you can't help but think 'that's a little gay'.

Some 'streetfighters' look okay, but I personally only like them if they look like they came out of the factory that way, for example I saw a GSXR a couple times recently that had bee 'streetfightered' but it had been done in such a way as to make you think it was made by suzuki themselves, and that looked pretty awesome.

It look shit, you should let me take it off your hands for five ponds. Wink

Most street fighters are just a cheap bodge repair job with Renthal bars, a cheap eBay street fighter headlight unit and various anodized tat. Sick

You've put a lot of time and effort in so far, don't ruin it by finishing it with a generic street fighter look. An R1 seat unit with under seat exhaust would certainly look interesting assuming it's done properly which going by the attention to detail on the rest of the bike I think is a given.

I'm a bit behind updating this thread. All I can say is fuck me this thing is ridiculously loud.

Finally got it running properly after finding the rear cylinder coil was no good.

This is the result....... Laughing Laughing

No smoke. No rattles nothing! Runs better than any bike I've ever owned before the response on the throttle is just stupid for a 15 year old bike. I LOVE IT! !!
