I had a similar problem with my carb when the needle was sticking, reaked of fuel every time i started my old bike up.

Having said that, the drain screw is just above the overflow you mentioned, could be a bad screw that might need replacing?

I posted a Video in May of it running quite happily and haven't touched the engine or carb since so I'm going to whip the carb off tomorrow and give it a clean.

And will also check to see if I have a spark Thumbs Up

Well I cleaned up my old carb swapped them over still nothing, Changed the Coil and Cap still nothing changed the CDI still nothing.

I Jiggled the throttle cable and it fired into life at about 6k rpm then died after about 20 seconds then deaded.

Given up for now before I set fire to it.

Iv tried 2 Intakes both look fine not even fine cracks on my 26 Year old 1.

Had both carbs off and cleaned, checked floats operating correctly and they're fine.

Seen some Keihin (I think that's how it's spelt) Carb on eBay Brand new for £49 might buy 1 just to see if that's the issue. As I really can't think of it being anything else.

Woah, I really wouldn't go splashing £50 on a carb, they are relatively simple things and don't have a lot to go wrong if they are set correctly. What condition is the air filter in? does using the choke make any difference?

Air filter brand new and Choke makes no difference at all, I'm going to bring both carbs into work tomorrow and make sure I have at least 1 fully functional set up Carburettor.

I noticed this morning when I was removing the Carb the throttle cable spring is all a bit squiffy and wondered if this could be the suspect in question.

Well Iv cleaned the carb again removed the jets and cleaned them set the fuel mixture screw to Haynes spec and set the float levels at 24.5mm.

Edit: Also sat the main jet in as it all looked a bit bodged so that's now set in properly.

https://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb259/Squeaky_86_2007/imagejpg1-34.jpg

If this doesn't cure it then I really am stumped.

Some squiffiness of the spring is normal and is the tension of the cable just pulling the top to one side, it will sit straight enough once it's back in the carb.
That said, there does seem to be quite a bit of tension on that - have you checked that your cable is adjusted correctly, not got any snags or crimped parts etc that could be putting tension on it? Looking at that pic it seems the cable is heavily adjusted at the carb end - try winding the carb top back upto that lock nut and slackening off the tension.

Failing that, a thought of another possibility of your problem... although I don't know the specifics of that carb' most will only allow the slider to go in one way but others will let you put it in more than one way (i.e. the right way and a wrong way). Do you have full smooth movement of the throttle or does it feel like it's already part open?

I just remember messing with a mates MT50 ( Embarassed ) field bike in my younger days when first getting into bikes and we had a problem with just your symptoms that had us stumped.... turned out we had put the slider in wrong so the alignment slots were in the wrong position and it was trying to start / run on pretty much full throttle Embarassed
Just make sure the slider is going all the way down and that your throttle feels normal, if in doubt try it the other way about and see if its any different Wink

Sounds good. That carb looked familiar from taking apart the one on my GS125 a couple of decades ago.

What was the problem that mentalboy fixed then?

Just a quick question, When we got the bike running again it did seem a bit on the noisy side, now Iv got my old engine which used to run as sweet as a nut albeit 5 years ago.

In that time it has mainly sat outside without the inlet or exhaust port covered is it scrap or could it be salvaged?

If the latter would it require a top end rebuild first or at least a strip down?

In the mean time here's a picture of an Air Filter

I wondered this and compared them to my old knackered 1 and have exactly the same markings and says made in Japan but I think they are in way to good condition to be nearly 30 years old but as long as the tank doesn't leak I couldn't give a .....

I thought I already had a new filter in the bike but it would appear I did or Iv lost it so I replaced old with new Shocked

https://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb259/Squeaky_86_2007/BC9A4F19-3DA9-4C7C-824C-554AE5E5DC98.jpg

Fitted the MC and Res this morning was up and out in the garage by about 7:40am Laughing

https://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb259/Squeaky_86_2007/975F8FEC-0305-4575-8A34-799C0F127C6B.jpg

also bolted the calliper on with new pads although didn't get round to bleeding them before I had to leave for work.

https://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb259/Squeaky_86_2007/8994FD88-0F33-4EFC-9901-770DC4640266.jpg

Now all I have to do is drop the fork legs in the Yokes a tad and go over every bolt and check they are all done up, put some air in the tyres and its MOT time Dance!

Right well I bled the brakes put some air in the tyres and faffed about dropping the fork legs into the yokes.

There must be an easier way than how I did it but it's done now and checked all the nuts and bolts.

Also picked up the matching Mudguard and tail section.

To cut a long story short had a little ride round on it and booked it in for its Mot which won't be happening until next next Tuesday as we're now going away on holiday for a week.

Both Gsxr's have now been demoted to the back of the garage until next year.

Well took it for it's MOT and unfortunately it didn't pass Crying or Very sad

Had 6 problems

https://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb259/Squeaky_86_2007/5B8C720D-786C-42D7-B85F-FFB578849D74.jpg

Done 4 them, had to order a new Clevis pin and then need to adjust the steering head bearings.

https://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb259/Squeaky_86_2007/imagejpg1-39.jpg

Was great to have a little ride around it on though Laughing

Waiting to get it MOT'd before I fit the mudguard as you can guarantee 1 of the bolts will snap or worse.
