Take the wheel off and the adjusters out. Clean everything and look for anything obviously wrong with it, damaged threads or damaged swing arm for example.

Grease everything up and try again. Maybe take photos and post them up here.

I used one of these for my XR:

Think I paid about £30.

<Flippant response> Give it a good kick.

Did you undo the spindle bolt? Have you checked that the bolt on the bar connected to your rear brake calliper/drum is loosened?

Failing that, give it a good kick...

It won't damage the chain or sprockets, but it will fuck the bearing for the shaft that the front sprocket sits on.

Give the end of the spindle/axle bolt a tap to make sure that there's no tightness there. No need to belt it hard.

Find a kerb. Roll the bike backwards into it so that the rear wheel hits it square. That should push the back wheel towards the front of the bike.

In future, when adjusting the chain, adjust little and ofter and remember to adjust the side opposite the chain as regularly as the chain side.

It'll feel correctly adjusted if you only do it chain-side, but when you adjust the other side to align the wheel correctly, it'll take out some slack and make the chain too tight.

You could get away with just cutting a piece of suitably thick/strong metal plate into an oblong and then drilling a hole in it in the right place.
