So today I decided to venture up to Paddys to obtain a bike that I wanted from him for ages.

So turned up in the van and piled it all in including basically another bike in spares.

Then left paddy and went to the Oakdene had breakfast Cool then home.

Here is the bike when I got home

https://i43.tinypic.com/2eulrvb.jpg

So after checking the bottom end of the engine and finding it is rumbling (not shocked was expecting a rebuild/new engine anyway)

Set about taking it apart ready to drop the engine and split it

Panels on

Panels off

https://i42.tinypic.com/29fpbf6.jpg

Subframe off and airbox, oil tank, carb out.

Wiring loom all disconnected but not removed as don't have a screwdriver big enough for the earth >_<

-----------------------

Plan is to drop the engine and split the cases and replace all bearings (this will be done once all parts have been sourced)

Expansion chamber is rusty but good condition so that will get washers welded on to the dents and slide hammer treatment, then wire wheel and hi-temp paint.

Fork seals will be done and forks refreshed.

Bits it needs that I don't have..

Radiator
Barrel and piston
Gear set (Derbi make them from plastic wtf and its snapped)
Brake master cylinder
Lock set
Chain and Sprockets
General service bits

Will be updating this thread as an when I do stuff!

If the bottom end is rumbling it might be an idea to get the crank rebuilt aswell while your in there.

New rod, new big end roller bearing, new main bearings and seals.

This +10.

Don't be tight, spend the extra £5 and do all seals and bearings at once. It'll only come back and bite you on the bum in the future, like mine did. Sad

There's a guy in Nottingham (Well his in Nottinghamshire but closer to Sheffield IMO) that does DT engines, does top job, is currently doing mine about £250-£350 to get full bottom end done and basically a new engine, fresh paint too. About £70 in labour IIRC.
His done about 12 engines now, and all the people have vouched for him doing a good job.

Could do it yourself however, just make sure you do all seals and bearings at once. Also, remember the seals on the DT's if one goes, chances are the other has too, or is on its way out. Wink

BTW you want a 3MB head and barrel (for more power).

Or you can get the 4DL TZR topend and that'll be all good.

The best topends you can go for IIRC.

That's if you're after power, if it's just a little run around, can go down the 3BN or similar route. Very Happy

I need to buy one, got a 3MB barrel IIRC, but the head is a 3BN. So a little power loss. Cool

head needs to be resleeved, or find a topend as the seize seriously scored the barrel.

Even if you found a cheap engine, chances are it's wrecked as well. Or done serious mileage so will need new seals etc.

Just do this one. Wink

as stated if I find a cheap engine <£300 ill just do the topend before it becomes an issue.

however ALL engine internals will be inspected and refreshed if needed.

Rebuilding the whole engine would be just as expensive as getting a 2nd hand one that would then need a top end rebuild at the minimum.
( Most of these bikes are owned by mongs)

It would also be far more reliable, but DEFINITELY get the crank rebuilt. Dont just 'check' it, replace all the bearings and seals in the engine. The barrel can be bored out to the next oversize.

My TDR125 had this engine and it was pretty shagged out when i got it. Rebuilt the whole engine and it was a good reliable bike....pretty quick for a 125 too.

Progress Progress Progress

Today I took brakes off the front is binding alot! the rear pads are made of metal Laughing

Rearsets removed and cleaned, swing arm cleaned and damage filed off so that the wheel spindle is free(er) to move forwards and backwards, rear hugger removed and chain guard, also discs removed and stored for later use.

still stuck with the earth wire holding the loom in as screw is buggered, might use chisel and flat screwdriver as it is pretty chewed up.

Front radial caliper needs cleaning up but looks to be in good condition.

wheel bearings are good surprisingly but for the price of them they will be replaced.

wiring loom is all cable tied to itself so nothing gets lost.

things to do:

Remove loom, drop engine.
